SPIRIT of ETHER NITRITE (109-95-5) Thermally unstable. Heat around or above 190°F/88°C can cause explosive decomposition (may not need air or oxygen). Decomposes in air, sunlight, or moisture. Forms explosive mixture with air (flash point —31°F/—35°C). A powerful oxidizer. Violent reaction with acids, acid fumes, amines, ammonia, cyanides, reducing agents, other strong oxidizers, salts. 

Spirit of Ether. Hoffmann s drops. A mixture of alcohol and ether. Made by mixing 325 ml ether U.S.P. with sufficient U.S.P. alcohol (about 690 ml) to make 1000 ml. Absolute ale by vol, about 66%.

Di lve 20 g. of the cyano ester in 100 ml. of rectified spirit and add a solution of 19 2 g. of pure potassium cyanide in 40 ml. of water. Allow to stand for 48 hours, then distil oflF the alcohol on a water bath. Add a large excess of concentrated hydrochloric acid and heat under reflux for 3 hours. Dilute with water, saturate the solution with ammonium sulphate, and extract with four 75 ml. portions of ether. Dry the combined ethereal extracts with anhydrous sodium or magnesium sulphate, and distil off the ether. RecrystaUise the residual acid from excess concentrated hydrochloric acid, and dry in the air. The yield of pure ew-dimethyl-succinic acid, m.p. 141-142°, is 12 g. 

Place 75 g. (74 ml.) of benzyl cyanide (Section IV,160), 125 g. (153 ml.) of rectifled spirit and 150 g. (68 ml.) of concentrated sulphuric acid in a 750 ml. round-bottomed flask, fitted with an efficient reflux condenser. Reflux the mixture, which soon separates into Wo layers, gently for 8 hoius, cool and pour into 350 ml. of water. Separate the upper layer. Dissolve it in about 75 ml. of ether (1) in order to facilitate the separation of the layers in the subsequent washing process. Wash the ethereal solution carefully with concentrated sodium bicarbonate solution until effervescence ceases and then with water. Dry over 10 g. of anh3 drous magnesium sulphate for at least 30 minutes. Remove the solvent with the aid of the apparatus shown in Fig. II, 13, 4 and distil from an air bath (Fig. II, 5, 3). The ethyl phenylacetate passes over at 225-229° (mainly 228°) as a colourless liquid the yield is 90 g. Alternatively, the residue after removal of the ether may be distilled in a Claisen flask under diminished pressm (Fig. II, 20, 1) collect the ester at 116-lI8°/20 mm. 

Method 2. Dissolve 20 0 g. of sahcylaldehyde in 30 ml. of rectified spirit, add a solution of 15 g. of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in 10 ml. of water, and render the mixture just alkahne with 10 per cent, sodium carbonate solution whilst coohng in ice. Allow to stand overnight. Acidify with acetic acid, distil off the alcohol under reduced pressiu e (water pump), dilute with twice the volume of water, and extract with two 50 ml. portions of ether. Dry the ethereal extract with anhydrous sodium or magnesium sulphate, distil off most of the ether, and allow the residue to crystaUise. RecrystallLse from chloroform - hght petroleum (b.p. 40-60°). The yield of sahcylaldoxime, m.p. 57°, is 12 g.
