Special Detergents

The retrospective implementation in machines already in use means that new process developments can be introduced much more quickly to many more machines and hence to a larger customer base, e.g. for a new special detergent. Until now, market penetration of new technology depended on the purchase of new machines, which slowed down the process considerably, given the long lifespan of modern washing machines. 

Cationic surfactants are used in only limited tonnage for specially detergent products, such us metal cleaners for electroplating, and more commonly in ancillary textile laundering products for their fabric-softening, antistatic, and germicidal properties. Acids are used in specialized detergent formulations (at approximately 0.5%) to reduce mineral deposits and soften water. Maximum effectiveness occurs at pH 2.5. At low pH, acid solutions are very corrosive toward stainless steel (and other metals). Phosphoric acid is preferred because of its relatively low corrosiveness and its compatibility with nonionic wetting agents.

Supercritical fluids have gained much attention recently because of the possibility of replacing toxic and environmentally less desirable solvents. For example, at the moment, the usual solvent used to dry-clean clothes is per-chloroethylene, CCI2CCI2. Although nonflammable and less toxic than carbon tetrachloride, which was the solvent previously used, perchloroethylene is regulated as an air pollutant under the Clean Air Act. Some scientists have shown that you can dry-clean with supercritical carbon dioxide if you use a special detergent.
