Refined com oil is obtained from the germ or embryo of Tea mays Linne (Fam. Gramineae), which contains nearly 50% of the fixed oil compared with 3.0-6.5% in the whole kernel. The oil is obtained from the embryo by expression and/or solvent extraction. Refining involves the removal of free fatty acids, phospholipids, and impurities decolorizing with solid adsorbents dewaxing by chilling and deodorization at high temperature and under vacuum. [Pg.205]

Synthetic Fuel. Solvent extraction has many appHcations in synthetic fuel technology such as the extraction of the Athabasca tar sands (qv) and Irish peat using / -pentane [109-66-0] (238) and a process for treating coal (qv) using a solvent under hydrogen (qv) (239). In the latter case, coal reacts with a minimum amount of hydrogen so that the solvent extracts valuable feedstock components before the soHd residue is burned. Solvent extraction is used in coal Hquefaction processes (240) and synthetic fuel refining (see Coal conversion processes Fuels, synthetic). [Pg.79]

Lubricants. Petroleum lubricants continue to be the mainstay for automotive, industrial, and process lubricants. Synthetic oils are used extensively in industry and for jet engines they, of course, are made from hydrocarbons. Since the viscosity index (a measure of the viscosity behavior of a lubricant with change in temperature) of lube oil fractions from different cmdes may vary from +140 to as low as —300, additional refining steps are needed. To improve the viscosity index (VI), lube oil fractions are subjected to solvent extraction, solvent dewaxing, solvent deasphalting, and hydrogenation. Furthermore, automotive lube oils typically contain about 12—14% additives. These additives maybe oxidation inhibitors to prevent formation of gum and varnish, corrosion inhibitors, or detergent dispersants, and viscosity index improvers. Solvents. Petroleum naphtha is a generic term appHed to refined, pardy refined, or unrefined petroleum products. Naphthas are prepared by any of several methods, including fractionation of distillates or even cmde petroleum, solvent extraction, hydrocracking of distillates, polymerization of unsaturated (olefinic) compounds, and alkylation processes. Naphtha can also be a combination of product streams from more than one of these processes. [Pg.210]

The principle of solvent extraction in refining is as follows when a dilute aqueous metal solution is contacted with a suitable extractant, often an amine or oxime, dissolved in a water-immiscible organic solvent, the metal ion is complexed by the extractant and becomes preferentially soluble in the organic phase. The organic and aqueous phases are then separated. By adding another aqueous component, the metal ions can be stripped back into the aqueous phase and hence recovered. Upon the identification of suitable extractants, and using a multistage process, solvent extraction can be used to extract individual metals from a mixture. [Pg.168]

Copper. Domestic mine production of copper metal in 1994 was over 1,800,000 t. Whereas U.S. copper production increased in the 1980s and 1990s, world supply declined in 1994. There are eight primary and five secondary smelters, nine electrolytic and six fire refiners, and fifteen solvent extraction—electro winning (SX—EW) plants. Almost 540,000 t/yr of old scrap copper and alloy are recycled in the United States accounting for - 24% of total U.S. consumption (11). New scrap accounted for 825,000 t of contained copper. Almost 80% of the new scrap was consumed by brass mills. The ratio of new-to-old scrap is about 60 40% representing 38% of U.S. supply. [Pg.565]

Codex has also defined the various types of cocoa butter ia commercial trade (10). Press cocoa butter is defined as fat obtained by pressure from cocoa nib or chocolate Hquor. In the United States, this is often referred to as prime pure cocoa butter. ExpeUer cocoa butter is defined as the fat prepared by the expeUer process. In this process, cocoa butter is obtained direcdy from whole beans by pressing ia a cage press. ExpeUer butter usuaUy has a stronger flavor and darker color than prime cocoa butter and is filtered with carbon or otherwise treated prior to use. Solvent extracted cocoa butter is cocoa butter obtained from beans, nibs, Hquor, cake, or fines by solvent extraction (qv), usuaUy with hexane. Refined cocoa butter is any of the above cocoa butters that has been treated to remove impurities or undesirable odors and flavors. [Pg.93]

Solvent extraction may also be used to reduce asphaltenes and metals from heavy fractions and residues before using them in catalytic cracking. The organic solvent separates the resids into demetallized oil with lower metal and asphaltene content than the feed, and asphalt with high metal content. Figure 3-2 shows the IFP deasphalting process and Table 3-2 shows the analysis of feed before and after solvent treatment. Solvent extraction is used extensively in the petroleum refining industry. Each process uses its selective solvent, but, the basic principle is the same as above. [Pg.53]

The residues from the vacuum distillation can also be refined to provide very viscous lubricants. The residues from paraflmic base oils are generally solvent extracted and dewaxed. The main use of these products (bright stocks) is as blending components for heavy lubricants. Thus residues from naphthenic base oils, which are also used as blending components for heavy lubricants, are normally not extracted. [Pg.448]

The metals are obtained from the metallic phase of the sulphide matte or the anode slime from electrolytic refining of nickel. In the traditional process for the platinum metals, their separation was facilitated by their solubility in aqua regia and convertibility into PdCl - or PtCl - salts.
