Solubilization antifoaming agents

As discussed earlier, many of the basic theories assumed that for effective antifoam action to occur, the antifoaming agent must be in the form of insoluble or undissolved particles or droplets, which transfer to the interface. However, this is not necessarily the case since there is some evidence that some solubilized antifoamers, such as tributyl phosphate and methylisobutyl carbinol (MIBC), can reduce the stability of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium oleate foam systems. However, in some cases, the oils may exceed the solubility limit.

There are, however, similarities between the two types of material in that each usually has limited solubihty in the aqueous hquid phase and each can produce a lowering of the surface tension of the system beyond that produced by the primary surfactant. However, the concentration levels at which the two are most effective differ. The antifoaming agents, for example, perform best when present at levels in excess of their solubility hmit, being held in reserve by solubilization in micelles. Foam stabihzers, however, are most effective when completely dissolved and may, in fact, become antifoaming agents when present as a separate phase. 

Cleaning solution formulations may include one or more deposit removers, plus an appropriate corrosion inhibitor (to protect exposed metal). An antifoam and often a wetting agent [e.g., an alkylarylpoly-ethoxy alcohol with a 12-15 hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) to improve detergency and solubilization] may also be added.
