Undesirable solids are drilled cuttings and those solids sloughed into the borehole. They usually occur in all size ranges from colloidal to coarse. The specific gravity of commonly encountered drilled solids ranges from 2.35 (shale), through 2.65 (sand), 2.69 (limestone), to 2.85 (dolomite) see Table 4-57 [29]. 

A different situation exists if the compound exists as form I and form III. This is referred to as a monotropic system, and here III is unstable relative to I over the whole solid range. In this case, however, the melting point of the unstable polymorph is lower than that of the stable (Tis lower than T ). 

From Fig. 3.12, we see that at fixed (low) temperature, the specific heat of various solids range over many orders of magnitude. Low specific heat materials (high Debye temperature) are for example very important in the realization of detectors (see Chapter 15). High specific heat materials are essential as regenerators in cryocoolers (see Chapter 5 and Fig. 3.13). 

The site density is actually this low, provided that the criterion concerning the turnover frequency is not violated. It is not impossible that a site density be very low we expect a priori to find solids ranging from those having a large number of active sites all the way to those having no active sites. 

FE data have been collected from the fracture of a wide variety of single and multi-component solids, ranging from single crystals of molecular solids to fiber-reinforced composites, and also from the peeling of adhesives 0-16 ). In this paper, we will restrict our attention to FE arising from the failure of polymer composites (fibrous and particulate), and the individual components thereof (fibers and matrix resins). 

The last two classes include the lareest group of synthetic org compds known, the azo dyes. The aromatic azocompds (class c, above) which are all colored solids, ranging from red to violet, are the most important to the expl industry. 

When a drop of liquid is placed on a solid surface the liquid may form a bead on the surface, or it may spread to form a film. A liquid having a strong affinity for the solid, i.e., if its surface tension is less than the critical surface tension of the surface, yc, will seek to maximize its contact (interfacial area) and spread to form a film. A liquid with much weaker affinity, i.e., if its surface tension is above yc, will form into a bead. The critical surface tensions of solids range from 18 mN/m for Teflon to about 46 mN/m for nylon. 

The most important polyhydric alcohols (Fig. 1) are white solids, ranging from crystalline pentaerythritol to the waxy trimethylol alkyls. The trihydric alcohols are very soluble in water, as is ditrimethylol propane. Pentaerythritol is moderately soluble and dipentaerythritol anti-tripentaerythritol are less soluble. 

The carrier portion of the corrugator adhesive provides the viscosity needed to hold the raw starch in suspension and to retain water during application. Heating and stirring of the carrier and of the final product need to be carefully controlled in order to maintain the correct viscosity. In the majority of corrugator formulations, starch solids range from 18% to 21%, but may increase to 30% for specialty applications. About 15-17% of the total starch is used as carrier. 

Stationary Phases. The stationary phases used in SEC are solids ranging from synthetic polymers to glasses. The earliest ones were soft gels, which cannot be used at high pressures. Consequently, the development of new phases has paralleled somewhat the development of more rigid resins and gels in IEC, as noted earlier. Some phases and their trade names are given in Table 12. 

The nutritional composition of ripe edible aril indicates that mangosteen contains a high percentage of carbohydrates, mostly in sugar form. It is relatively low in minerals and vitamins. The calcium and phosphorus content is high. The percentage of total soluble solids ranges from 13 to 15.2% in immature and 18.3 to 19% in mature fruits (Table 19.2). 

Salinity is defined here as the grams of dissolved solids (or inorganic dissolved compounds) per kg of seawater, or parts per thousand (or as a per thou-sand%o). Alternatively, it can be defined as the mg/L or mmol/L of the major ions (i.e., those present in concentrations above 1 ppm). The total concentration of dissolved solids ranges from 7,000 ppm for the Baltic Sea, to an average of 35,000 ppm in large oceans, and up to 40,000 ppm in regions where evaporation is high and inputs are low, such as the Red Sea.

Although there is no sharp boundary between ionic bonding and covalent bonding, it is convenient to consider each of these as a separate entity before attempting to discuss molecules and lattices, in which both are important. Furthermore, because the purely ionic bond may be described with a simple electrostatic model, it is advantageous to discuss it first. The simplicity of the electrostatic, model has caused chemists to think of many solids as systems of ions. We shall see that this view needs some modification, and there are, of course, many solids, ranging from diamond to metals, which require alternative theories of bonding.
