A recent trend in particle analysis has been the introduction of personal computer-based automation (3). Sophisticated software packages can be used to automate and speed up the analysis. In some cases these computers can even carry out continuous process control (qv) (see Computer technology). The latest machines also allow the measurements of smaller particles and can detect a wider range of sizes. Machines based on light-scattering principles are being more widely accepted by the industry because of speed. An average analysis takes from 1—2 min, whereas those based on sedimentation principles require from 10—120 min. 

Currently, the trend in process control is away from centrahzed process control and toward an increased number of small distributed-control or PLC systems. This trend will put emphasis on the evolution of the fieldbus controller and continued growth of the PC-based controller. Also, as hardware and software improves, the functionality of the controller will increase, and the supporting hardware will be physically smaller. Hence, the traditional lines between the DCS and the PLC will become less distinct as systems will be capable of supporting either function set. 

The software employed for the eritieal elements (memory, alarming, tripping, and eommunieating with the host eomputer) uses a real-time operating system and resides in the main CPU. The administrative CPU employs multitasking software that performs important tasks sueh as modem eommunieation, trending, and arehiving. 

As a minimum the software program should provide automatic database management, automatic trending, automatic report generation and simplified diagnostics. As in... 

Automatic trending The software program should be capable of automatically storing all acquired data and updating the trends of all variables. This capability should include multiple parameters not just a broadband or single variable. This will enable the user to display trends of all variables that affect plant operations. 

The increasing availability of more powerful computers at a lower cost, and of easy-to-use and inexpensive technical software packages is expected to accelerate these trends. 

On the software front, the early 1990s witnessed a continued trend toward commercially produced programs being used in pharmaceutical companies.

For a manufacturer the difficulty is to estimate future developments or trends in NMR microscopy. Based on dedicated laboratory-made hardware developed by the NMR microscopy users and on their requests for new commercial hardware and software, the following topics could become more important micro-coil applications, multiple receiver systems and multi-coil arrangements, NMR microscopy at very high magnetic fields, MAS imaging and localized 1H MAS spectroscopy and localized single-shot 2D spectroscopy. There are no clear-cut distinctions between most of the individual topics, as will be discussed in the following sections.
