Computational chemists and other scientists who are viewed as potential customers are familiar with claims from some software vendors that their products will increase productivity and efficiency, offer comprehensive solutions to research problems, reduce the need for time-consuming and expensive laboratory procedures, provide predictive power, and lead to successful research These claims sound enticing indeed. But it is hard to quantitate the extent to which these claims are fulfilled when the software products are in the hands of the users.
