The cmc values of nDTMABr and SOS in water are in good agreement with literature values (26) our a values are slightly different from Evans for SDS (0.26 and 0.32 respectively) however, there is a 15 K temperature difference between the two experiments. Furthermore, Evans uses the transference number of the sodium ion at infinite dilution in his calculation. We have also determined a for sodium dodecylsulfate in water at 298.15 K. We found a = 0.24. Literature values range from 0.18 to 0.28 according to the physicochemical method used (27,28). [Pg.120]

The chemical polymerization of aniline at the interface between two immiscible solvents provides an attractive alternative route to PAn s. Such interfacial polymerization was first demonstrated in 1994 by Michaelson and McEvoy,82 who produced a freestanding PAn film at the interface between a solution of aniline/sodium dodecylsulfate in carbon tetrachloride and an aqueous oxidant solution containing ammonium persulfate/HCl. The phase diagrams of two quaternary mixtures made of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-water-dodecane and hexanol (system A) or pentanol (system B) have been investigated in detail [22,23]. In both cases, sections of the three-dimensional diagram with constant water/surfactant ratio have been examined. Toshima et al. obtained colloidal dispersions of platinum by hydrogen- and photo-reduction of chloroplatinic acid in an aqueous solution in the presence of various types of surfactants such as dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTAC) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) [60]. The nanoparticles produced by hydrogen reduction are bigger and more widely distributed in size than those resulting from the photo-irradiation method. Hydrogenation of vinylacetate was chosen as a catalytic reaction to test the activity of these surfactant-stabilized colloids. Anionic surfactants are present in surface water, resulting in serious environmental pollution. Therefore, adsorption of surfactants, such as sodium dodecylsulfate [155,156], on Mg/Al LDHs has received considerable attention. Ulibarri et al. also published the results of sorption of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate) from water by LDHs and calcined samples (773 K), focusing both on their potential application as a sorbent and on the possibility of their recycling [154,157]. They found that anionic exchange was complete when the interlayer anion in the LDH precursor was Cl", reaching 100 % of AEG, and calcined LDH-carbonates were better adsorbents than those derived from LDH-chloride samples, however. The increase in conductivity is due to increase in dissolved surfactant, and this increase continues until all the crystallites dissolve. The peak in specific conductance is attained when the microemulsion is formed and the specific conductance levels off. The plateau of Figure 6 is often referred to as a "percolation threshold" (] ) and is reached when there is a disordered interspersion capable of bicontinuous structures ( ). Further addition of methanol results in a lowering of conductivity explained by the solution eventually approaching the conductivity of methanol. This is the region of molecular dispersion. These conductivity curves are similar to those observed by Lagues and Santerey (13) on a system of water, cyclohexane, sodium dodecylsulfate and 1-pentanol. [Pg.292]
