Sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate

Aerosol AT solutions (sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate) ftloUed according to both dynamic (drop formation period 2 sec) and static (drop formation period 2 min) values. The difference in the ape of the isotherms clearly indicates the significance of the time of surface formation for effective emulsifier edsorption and stabilization at the interface. Apart from the emulsifier structure, the process may depend on the difference in polarity between the contiguous phases,... [Pg.254]

A patented procedure for the suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate which is claimed to produce a nonsticky bead pol)mier [118] uses an aqueous phase consisting of 537 gm of distilled water, 0.25 gm gum tragacanth, and 0.10 gm sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT). The monomer charged consists of 690 gm of vinyl acetate and 0.69 gm of dibenzoyl peroxide. [Pg.243]

Most commonly, in the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate, anionic surfactants are used either alone or in combination with a protective colloid. Typical examples of surfactants which have found application are Aerosol OT (sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate), alkyl aryl sulfonate salts (e.g., Santomerse-3), sodium lauiyl sulfate, etc. A study of the kinetics of the vinyl acetate polymerization in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate indicated that the rate of polymerization was proportional to the square root of the initiator concentration and the 0.25th power of the number of particles. The number of particles were proportional to the 0.5th 0.05 power of the surfactant concentration but independent of the level of potassium persulfate. The intrinsic viscosity of the final polymer was said to be independent of the initiator concentration and of the munber of polymer particles. These observations were said to suggest that the mechanism of the vinyl acetate polymerization in emulsion resembles that of vinyl chloride [153]. [Pg.256]

For example, compositions of 10 ml of a 3.75 gm per 100 ml aqueous solution of sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT or Manoxol OT) and 1.25 ml of vinyl acetate with small additions of sodium dihydrogen phosphate, after exclusion of oxygen by at least four degassings, were sealed in glass ampoules. The samples were exposed, at 15°C, to a Co source (100 curie). Conversion was nearly 75% after 30 min. Polymers of MW as high as 10 were formed. The polymers contained trapped free radicals capable of initiating graft polymerization with methyl methacrylate after removal from the radiation source [185]. [Pg.270]

Migration and concentration levels of sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (SDOSS) surfactant molecules in silicone-modified 50%/50% styrene/butyl acrylate latex were detected at the film-substrate and film-air interfaces in mono- and double-layered films. The SDOSS content was shown to be influenced by the presence of trimethoxysilyl propylmethacrylate siloxane (202). [Pg.35]

OT or AOT (sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate) aerosols were the most studied systems suitable for the synthesis of nanoparticle magnetic materials [181, 182]. Other systems, such as acetyluimethylammonia bromide [183], sodium dodecyl sulfate [184], and polyethoxylate [185] were used for synthesis to optimize the nanoparticles morphology and chemical parameters of the process. Many of the reactions in micelles are similar to those in large volumes, but with the difference that allows to control the nanoparticles morphology due to the surfactant presence. [Pg.318]

Two common surfactants, SDS and sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate, have been found to occupy areas of 0.50 and 1.11 nm respectively, when adsorbed at the oil-water interface. Calculate the amount of each surfactant required to completely saturate the interface formed by the emulsification of 500 g of tetradecane in one liter of aqueous surfactant solution. Assume that the emulsion is monodisperse with a droplet diameter of 1000 nm. [Pg.321]
