Socially responsible and sustainable

The industry is asking whether this is what even the most passionate environmentalist really wants - now that there is an unequivocal industry commitment to phase-out (on a sensible time-scale) now that mercury emissions have been reduced to a level which is harmless to the environment and given that the industry does have important environmental improvement projects that it would like to carry out - is this a socially responsible and sustainable way of spending our resources ...

Markets are becoming more interdependent, global, and sophisticated. Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are emerging as key requirements for doing business in a greener world. 

The key documents of the CDIO approach have been updated. The CDIO Syllabus v2.0 has added two new sections on leadership and entrepreneurship, and given more emphasis to certain topics that were previously subsumed under other headings, for example, ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability. The CDIO Standards v2.0 now includes distinct rubrics for each standard to facilitate self-evaluation. The general structure of the chapters remains the same in that they parallel the CDIO Standards. The chapters on implementation, history of engineering, and outlook have also been updated sinee the first edition. 

Social and political factors play an important role. For example social responsibility and sustainability (see Chapter 1) are important considerations today. They impact a company s image and the public s perception of a company. 

Although many safety issues have gained recognition in the shared workplaces and many tools and methods have been developed (especially for contractors in con-stmction sites), there are still many HSEQ and security threats related to supplier s management in global business environment. The whole supply chain needs to be considered and a comprehensive safety culture in shared workplace needs to be established. If company seeks to perform higher than average in the terms of HSEQ, they must ensure of corporate social responsibility and sustainable processes. HSEQ AP can be one method to support that purpose.

Every industry in the United States is grappling with sustainability, or corporate social responsibility, and the chemical industry is no exception. During the first quarter of 2004, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), in collaboration with BRIDGES to Sustainability (BRIDGES), conducted a survey, two focus groups, and interviews of senior executives and managers in the chemical industry, which revealed the following.
