Social inhibitions

The influence of gonadal hormones on prepubertal animals suggests some steroidal sensitivity in adults with regard to F. elicitation. Young male sheep are induced to perform F. in response to exogenous T and to 17-p-estradiol F. in female red deer is also sensitive to T injections (Parrott, 1978 Fletcher, 1978). Sex differences can interact with the hormonal state where social conditions vary. Female cats (intact) display F. to urine marks only in the absence of males testosterone propionate induced F. in spayed females towards estrous females (Verbeme, 1976 Hart and Leedy, 1987), whereas an ovarian hormone (estradiol) failed to elicit F. to males (intact, and sexually inactive), presumably indicative of social inhibition overriding steroid facilitation. 

Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD). APD is virtually indistinguishable from the generalized subtype of social anxiety disorder. APD is typically diagnosed when the social inhibition pervades almost all social interaction and has been present since childhood. Some have suggested that it is, in fact, the most severe manifestation of generalized social anxiety disorder and does not warrant inclusion as a separate diagnostic entity. 

Pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, hypersensitivity to negative evaluation... 

Patients with avoidant personality disorder manifest social inhibition, a sense of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation. Because most patients with avoidant personality disorder also have social phobias, these conditions overlap to a substantial degree. Indeed, some investigators estimate that as many as 85% of these patients also meet diagnostic criteria for social phobia ( 261, 262). Therefore, social phobias should always be considered when the diagnosis of avoidant personality is made. 

One of the initial effects of alcohol is a depression of social inhibitions, which can serve to bolster mood. Alcohol is not a stimulant, however. From the first sip to the last, body systems are being depressed. 

The communication process is also affected by all these other variables. Sometimes, there are things you have observed or ideas you have come up with that you just do not know how to communicate properly or that are communicated in a distorted form. Sometimes, this is caused by social inhibitions about frank discussion of things that are taboo sometimes, it results from the fact that scientific communication is so overwhelmingly confined to words and that words are not adequate to... 

Mania occurs less frequently than depression. It is characterized by overactivity and loss of social inhibitions and mood generally inappropriate to the circumstances. A manic... 

With mild to moderate intoxication, patients exhibit euphoria, mild incoordination, ataxia, nystagmus, and impaired judgment and reflexes. Social inhibitions are ioosened, and boisterous or aggressive behavior is common. Hypogiycemia may occur, especially in children and in persons with reduced hepatic giycogen stores.

In their review of ten years of research on group size and helping, Latane and Nida specifically examined the impact that situational ambiguity has on the social inhibition to act. Not surprisingly, they conclude that the social influence processes leading to the inhibition of helping are more likely under relatively ambiguous conditions than in situations... 

Some of the other medicinal benefits of alcohol are alleviation of minor aches and pains, inducement of sleep, dilation of blood vessels so that more blood reaches the tissues, warming of the skin, and relaxation of sexual and social inhibitions. However, there is always the danger that one may become dependent on these effects, and that excessive drinking may result.
