Smoke, colored production

The cadmium chalcogenide semiconductors (qv) have found numerous appHcations ranging from rectifiers to photoconductive detectors in smoke alarms. Many Cd compounds, eg, sulfide, tungstate, selenide, teUuride, and oxide, are used as phosphors in luminescent screens and scintiUation counters. Glass colored with cadmium sulfoselenides is used as a color filter in spectroscopy and has recently attracted attention as a third-order, nonlinear optical switching material (see Nonlinear optical materials). DiaLkylcadmium compounds are polymerization catalysts for production of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Mixed with TiCl, they catalyze the polymerization of ethylene and propylene.

Solvent dyes are also used in the coloration of any solvent or wax based product, including polishes, cosmetics, crayons, candles, inks, stains and adhesives. They are also in the coloured smokes that are used in outdoor displays, for instance coloured trails from aircraft, and in safety and security applications. 

In addition to an oxidizer, pyrotechnic mixtures will also contain a good fuel - or electron donor - that reacts with the liberated oxygen to produce an oxidized product plus heat. This heat will enable the high-energy chemist to produce any of a variety of possible effects - color, motion, light, smoke, or noise. 

Most explosive and pyrotechnic reactions produce significant quantities of smoke, and this visible phenomenon may or may not be desirable. Smoke can obscure colored flames, and therefore attempts are made to keep the production of smoke to a minimum in such mixtures. However, a variety of smoke-producing compositions are purposefully manufactured for use in daytime signalling and troop and equipment obscuration, as well as for amusement and entertainment purposes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the addition of nitrate and nitrite salts to fish products. Maximum permitted levels vary among products and types of fish, with up to 500 ppm residual sodium nitrate or 200 ppm sodium nitrite permitted as a preservative and color fixative in smoke cured sable fish, shad, or salmon (Code of Federal Regulations, 1981a,b Committee on Nittite and Alternative Curing Agents in Food, 1981). 

Early refiners utilized simple batch distillation to prepare kerosenes and lubricating oils. As the demand for these materials expanded and new crude oils were found, certain desirable and undesirable characteristics became apparent. Crude oils were selected from which products possessing desirable characteristics could be distilled—for example, oxidation stability, low smoke tendency, low carbon-forming tendency, small viscosity change with change in temperature (high viscosity index), light color, and attractive appearance were more likely to be found in petroleum of the paraffinic or Pennsylvania type. 

The product does not cause yellowing during cure nor does it smoke during the procedure. In practice, INTEX SOFTENER 215 has been found to cause no problems of bleeding and color migration often found in other types of nonionic liquid softeners.
