The cadmium chalcogenide semiconductors (qv) have found numerous appHcations ranging from rectifiers to photoconductive detectors in smoke alarms. Many Cd compounds, eg, sulfide, tungstate, selenide, teUuride, and oxide, are used as phosphors in luminescent screens and scintiUation counters. Glass colored with cadmium sulfoselenides is used as a color filter in spectroscopy and has recently attracted attention as a third-order, nonlinear optical switching material (see Nonlinear optical materials). DiaLkylcadmium compounds are polymerization catalysts for production of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Mixed with TiCl, they catalyze the polymerization of ethylene and propylene. [Pg.392]

The color obtained is a function of both the composition and the particle size of the precipitated crystals. A redder color results from both increased selenium to sulfur ratio and from larger crystals, caused by a more severe heat treatment. Hence, it is possible to make, from the same glass, a series of color filter types, by controlled reheating. [Pg.426]

Dyes for Color Filters. Colorhquid crystal display systems consist of LSI drivers, glass plates, polarizers, electrodes (indium—tin oxide), and microcolor filters. The iadependent microcolor filter containing dyes is placed on each Hquid crystal pixel addressed electrically and acts as an iadividual light switch. All colors can be expressed by the light transmitted through each filter layer of the three primary colors, ie, red, green, and blue (Fig. 12). [Pg.340]

Plastics are suitable for most optical applications that utilize transparent materials, including color carriers. Color filters have all types of standard transmission characteristics that can be made and, because of the uniqueness of the plastic structure, a large number of dichroic and trichroic materials are possible that have different colors when viewed from different angles. One application for this is in polarizing filters. [Pg.235]

Colorimeter Also called color comparator or photoelectric color comparator. An instrument for matching colors with results about the same as those of visual inspection, but more consistent. Basically the sample is illuminated by light from the three primary color filters and scanned by an electronic detecting system. It is sometimes used in conjunction with a spectrophotometer, which is used for close control of color in production. [Pg.633]

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). Liquid crystal displays, once limited to small devices such as calculators, are now displacing color CRT (cathode ray tube) displays in commercial quantities. The ability to fabricate these display devices at high quality and at low cost is partially due to the wider spread use of photopolymer-based materials. Photopolymer technology is being used for the alignment of liquid crystal (LC) elements (49), the orientation of ferroelectric materials (50), the synthesis of LC polymers (57) and the manufacture of color filters for liquid crystal display applications (52). [Pg.8]

The simulation discussed above was based on full color produced by individual red, green, and blue emitters. Other full-color reproduction approaches have been proposed for OLED displays including color from blue emitter by means of energy down conversion fluorescent filter [177], and color from white emitters by means of transmission color filter sets similar to that used in LCD industry [178,179]. Table 1.5 compares the EL efficiency of equivalent white... [Pg.32]
