As more complex operations, such as catalytic cracking and reforming were introduced, more complex instrumentation and controls were needed to operate the plants safely and economically. Pneumatic units replaced manual controllers as operations became more complex. These were subsequently replaced by electronic controllers, then by programmed smart controllers, and eventually by computerized systems. Each evolution required that operators, instrument technicians, and analyzer technicians have more and more technical training to understand process operations and perform their Job safely and profitably. A gradual evolutionary process occurred and many employees evolved into technicians. They were no longer just blue collar workers.

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) refers to the production or alteration of control data for manufacturing. More recently, plastics CAM has been extended by the availability of smart controllers for injection-molding machines. This is an important development and will be discussed in detail subsequently. 

A damper with a fixed damping coefficient will not be able to achieve a similar performance as the presented control method. The best response in far field type earthquakes is established by minimum damping with an extra control force at some time instances near field type earthquakes, on the other hand, appear to be best handled with a fixed base. Therefore, in either case a fixed valued damper will not suffice to produce a desirable structural response. At last, a smartly controlled semiactive damper is able to protect a seismically isolated building from both near and far field type earthquakes.

Extremely precise engineering and coordination are necessary for the installation of instrumentation and wiring. Smart control systems coupled with communication systems are extremely critical for O M of the facilities.
