Anti catarrhal. The mucus-reducing activity of elder may be due to its high potassium content, but in any case this plant helps to clear up bronchial mucus, hay fever and sinus congestion. Both flowers and berries help to dry up a runny nose. When the flowers are taken before hay fever season they help to lessen its severity. A gargle made of elder blossoms steeped in vinegar can be used to treat sore throats and tonsillitis. Elder has even successfully treated catarrhal deafness and children s croup. A tea made of elder flowers can ease hoarseness and make the voice clear. Parts used flowers, berries. [Pg.26]

While a tradition of using minor remedies for things like colds or warts existed, reasonable people left the control of drugs in the hands of the experts. Even patent medicines derived their fundamental cultural status from the implied approval of these groups, or had to go back to their precursors, the medicine men and shamans of primitive days. To this day, television advertisements for patent medicines that will cure headaches, sinus congestion, or "tired blood" are... [Pg.6]

One of these is Ephedrine where the carbon chain plus aminic tail is CH(0H)CH(CH3)NH(CH3), looking like a close brother of PEA. Ephedrine is a natural product extracted from a plant called Ephedra and used in traditional Chinese medicine. It can also be made in the laboratory. Ephedrine is administered as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, and concentration aid. It seems to work by increasing the activity of norepinephrine. It is used, for example, by professional weightlifters and athletes. Another close brother of PEA is pseudoephedrine, which is a chiral isomer of ephedrine, and it causes vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels) and relaxation of smooth muscles, thus leading to bronchial dilation. It is administered for nasal/sinus congestion and difficulty in breathing. Methamphetamine is another... [Pg.31]

Isopinocamphone is the main constituent of oil of hyssop, Hyssopus officinalis (Lamiaceae), imparting the typical mucolytic properties of ketones, while muscle relaxant activity has been demonstrated in vivo (Lu et al. 2002).
