We know a great deal about the nature of the universe. For instance, the element hydrogen makes up about 75% of all the mass in the universe. In terms of number, about 90% of all atoms in the universe are hydrogen atoms, and most of the rest of the atoms in the universe are helium. All the other heavier elements make up just one to two percent of the total. Interestingly, the most abundant element on Earth (in number of atoms) is oxygen (O ). Oxygen accounts for about 50% of all the elements found in the Earth s crust, and silicon, the second most abundant element, makes up about 25%. Silicon dioxide (SiO ) accounts for about 87% of the total Earth s mass. Sfiicon dioxide is the main chemical compound found in sand and rocks. [Pg.2]

In addition to silica (silicon dioxide SiO ), the crystal form of silicon is found in several semiprecious gemstones, including amethyst, opal, agate, and jasper, as well as quartz of varying colors. A characteristic of quartz is its piezoelectric effect. This effect occurs when the quartz crystal is compressed, producing a weak electrical charge. Just the opposite occurs when electric vibrations are fed to the crystal. These vibrations are then duphcated in the crystal. Quartz crystals are excellent timekeeping devices because of this particular characteristic. [Pg.195]

Preliminary experiments were conducted to calibrate the instrumentation used in this study and to determine the amount of particles needed for reliable detection. We used dilutions prepared from purchased silicon dioxide (SiO ) standards (Postnova Analytics) with a known particle size, 70 nm, and a starting concentration of 25 mg/ml of particles suspended in aqueous surfactant. With the available light scattering detector, reliable quantification of the standard could be obtained with as few as 7 x 10 particles per injected sample, which is equivalent to 25 pg of particle mass. Based on these data, our subsequent experimental work used tissue samples containing 1—2 mg of particles. Using particle aliquots greater than 40 times the limit of detection enabled robust quantification in the experiments to develop nanoparticle recovery protocols. [Pg.220]
