Short fibers polypropylene composites

The decrease is large when nylon is blended with PP and smaller when PP is blended with nylon. Comparing the composite properties, the long fiber polypropylene compounds can easily double the flexural modulus and Izod impact strengths over the corresponding short fiber polypropylene compounds... [Pg.315]

This chapter discusses the rheological properties of surface treated short and long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites in molten state. Glass fibers were surface-treated by silane coupling agent. [Pg.310]

An example of a typical material composition is the combination of a polymer and a filler. Because compounding is a techiuque that can complement the drawbacks of conventional polymers, it has been studied over a long period and its practical apphcations are well known. Reinforcing materials such as short-fiber are often used for compounding with thermoplastic polymers in order to improve their mechaiucal or thermal properties. Polypropylene and polyamide (nylon) are used for the thermoplastic polymers, while glass fiber and carbon fiber are mainly used as reinforcing materials. A few ttm... [Pg.136]

Additionally, besides the movement of fibers occurring in a whole bulk of molten polymer, the phenomenon of shearing is also present, which occurs between polypropylene chains and injection mold. It was found that a small amount (5% by weight) of flax or hemp fibers in injected polymer already causes the presence of hexagonal form in molds. As the content of fibers in the composite increases (by weight), the amount of induced p form increases and exceeds 25% at 10% fiber content in the composite. Further increasing of short fiber content... [Pg.271]

Water repellant treatments involve the deposition of a thin layer of a hydrophobic substance onto external surfaces and, to some extent, internal cell lumen surfaces. Generally the equilibrium moisture content is not significantly altered by these water repellent treatments, although the absorption rate is reduced, so that it may take months or even years to reach equilibrium. For short to medium term protection, polymer coatings can be applied to reduce moisture absorption. For example, short jute fiber/PLA composites, coated with 100 pm thick polypropylene plastic adhesive tape, have been shown to be moisture resistant in humid environments, although the effects were not long lasting [34]. [Pg.340]

A traditional chemical extraction process that uses an alkaline sodium hydroxide solution has also been applied to the same wooden material. Fibers extracted by the two methods have been used as reinforcement for the two commercial polypropylenes the conventional isotactic polypropylene, and maleic anhydride functionalized isotactic polypropylene (iPPMA). The composites have also been subjected to a water absorption treatment. To assess the reinforcement effect of fibers, composite characterization techniques and determination of mechanical properties have been performed with particular attention to the fiber-matrix interfacial characteristic. The results have been compared with those of short glass reinforced polypropylene composites. [Pg.758]
