Computer-controlled automatic profile dies with electrical controlled sensors in closed-loop control systems have developed greater efficiency and accuracy to extrusion coating, cast film, and sheet lines. A scanner measures the web thickness and signals the computer, which then converts the readings to act on thermally actuated die bolts. The individual adjusting bolts expand or contract as ordered by the computer to control the profile. The more sophisticated systems measure adjusting bolt temperature and provide faster response time with less scrap and quicker startups. The scanner is typically an infrared, nuclear, or caliper-type gauge. [Pg.538]

Profiles comprise cross sections that are not a circle, annulus, or wide sheet. Like pipe and tubing lines, profile extrusion lines consist of an extruder, profile die, calibration device, cooling system, puller, and a cut-off saw and stacker or wind-up unit. The main differences are the dies and calibration units. Due to lack of symmetry, obtaining a correct cross section in a profile die is difficult. Differential flow resistance in different parts of the cross section alters the flow rate for these parts of the die. In addition, die swell may vary due to the differences in flow. Consequently, the extrudate may bend as it exits the die. To equalize flow, the die land length is varied or restricting plates are used in channels where the flow is too rapid. Many profile dies are split into sections, with the die sliced perpendicular to the major axis. Thus, sections can be altered in the process of die development. Flow simulation software is particularly useful in profile die design. [Pg.386]

A major part of film, sheet, coating, pipe, profile, etc. lines involve windup rolls. They include winders, dancer rolls, lip rolls, spreader rolls, textured rolls, engraved rolls, and cooling rolls. All have the common feature that they are required to be extremely precise in all their operations and measurements. Their surface conditions include commercial grade mirror finishes, precision bearings and journals are used, and, most important, controlled variable rotating speed controls to ensure uniform product tension control. [Pg.34]

Foamed polyurethane. The basic chemicals are mixed in the liquid state with foaming agents, and swell into a low-density foam which sets by polymerization into a rigid mass. As the swelling material will expand into any shape required, it is ideal for the core of sandwich panels, and the sheet material skins may be flat or profiled. When the panels are manufactured the mixture is injected between the inner and outer skins and expands to the thickness required, adhering to the lining materials. [Pg.174]

The calender was developed over a century ago to produce natural rubber products. With the developments of TPs, these multimillion dollar extremely heavy calender lines started using TPs and more recently process principally much more TP materials. The calender consists essentially of a system of large diameter heated precision rolls whose function is to convert high viscosity plastic melt into film, sheet, or coating substrates. The equipment can be arranged in a number of ways with different combinations available to provide different specific advantages to meet different product requirements. Automatic web-thickness profile process control is used via computer, microprocessor control. [Pg.525]

Rubbers are also being extruded, in a not essentially different way from plastics. Cooling of the extrusion cylinder is necessary to prevent premature vulcanisation as a result of the heat developed by internal friction. The extruder is fed by ribbons, obtained from milled sheets. End products are hoses, profiles, and cable mantles. On-line vulcanisation can be achieved by passing the extrudate through a steam channel, while the rate of extrusion is adjusted to the rate of curing. For this purpose high-rate vulcanisation recipes have been developed. Steam temperatures of about 200 °C are being applied (15 bars pressure). Treads for motorcar tyres are also extruded they are wrapped round the pre-formed carcass and then formed and vulcanised in a press. [Pg.219]

Analysis of full sheet data is useful for process performance evaluations and product value calculations. For feedback control or any other on-line application, it is necessary to continuously convert scanner data into a useful form. Consider the data vector Y ,k) for scan number k.
