Corrugated sheets

First, sheet corrugated board was shown to perform well in absorbing shock in tests in which three sheets of corrugated board were put into a small case and the cases used as shock absorbers for preventing the propagation of explosion from a detonator. Second, the safety of the new package was shown by applying the United Nations classification tests for explosives. 

Cushioning materials in widespread use include air bubble sheet, cellulose padding, cork-based granules/sheet, corrugated plastic comers, corrugated sleeves, embossed paper, expanded polystyrene, other expanded plastics, foam in place, free flow polystyrene, sawdust and shavings, straw, wood wool. 

Some cooling towers operate with natural draft. This is possible because the warmer, humid air inside the tower is less dense than the colder, drier outside air. Many such towers are hyperbolic and may require an overall height of 220 ft. The fill used in such a column must be quite open to avoid any significant pressure drop. Such fill can have a tee- or vee-shaped cross section molded from perforated plastic sheets. Corrugated sheets made of asbestos and cement are popular in large natural draft towers. A ceramic cellular block that is stacked into the tower also is used. These fills, however, provide a small interfacial area per cubic foot so mass transfer is rather low per foot of packed depth.

Black phosphorus is formed when white phosphorus is heated under very high pressure (12 000 atmospheres). Black phosphorus has a well-established corrugated sheet structure with each phos phorus atom bonded to three neighbours. The bonding lorces between layers are weak and give rise to flaky crystals which conduct electricity, properties similar to those ol graphite, it is less reactive than either white or red phosphorus.

Common materials—such as textiles in the form of fibers or fabrics, foamed rubber, foamed plastics, thin sheets of plastic, paper, corrugated cardboard, combustible dusts, dry grass and twigs, and wood shavings—are all examples of materials with large sutface areas in relation to their volumes. In a well-estabhshed fire, materials with relatively small surface areas, such as chunks of coal or logs, burn readily. 

Fine, short, cracklike pits run transversely across the apex of many corrugations on the stainless sheets (Figs. 2.24 and 2.25). The corrosion sites originate at the apex of the corrugations at small circular discolorations, spaced apart exactly the peak-to-peak distance between corrugations. All cracklike pits are aligned in the same direction, regardless of their locations on the plate.

Another approach is to recognise that initially for a flat sheet, the axial stiffness is high but the transverse stiffness is relatively low. As the corrugation depth increases then the transverse stiffness increases but at the expense of the axial stiffness. It is readily shown that the axial deflection per unit load for the corrugations for the new geometry compared with the flat sheet is given by...

Corrugated sheet, or crimped sheet (usually somewhat thin) (Figures 9-6GG-NN). 

For structured packings as loadings increase, HETP increases, and is more pronounced for wire-mesh types, and the effect is less for the corrugated sheet packings [90]. 

Radiation transfer is largely eliminated when an insulant is placed in close contact with a hot surface. Radiation may penetrate an open-cell material but is rapidly absorbed within the immediate matrix and the energy changed to conductive or convective heat flow. It is also inhibited by the use of bright aluminum foil, either in the form of multi-corrugated sheets or as outer facing on conventional insulants.

Probably the most familiar coated steel sheets are the ubiquitous galvanised corrugated roofing and cladding sheets which have been used for many years, particularly for farm buildings, either painted or unpainted. In addition to zinc other metallic coatings are available, e.g. hot dip aluminium and hot dip aluminium-zinc alloys.

Materials of construction must he corrosion resistant. Steel should he hot galvanized, although some resin coatings may suffice. GRP casings are used hy some manufacturers. The water-dispersal packing of a cooling tower is made of treated timber or corrugated plastic sheet. 

Different core materials are used. They include foam, honeycomb core (plastic, paper, aluminum, etc.), ribs, balsa wood, filler spacers, corrugated sheet spacers, etc. Materials such as polyurethane foam, cellulosic foams, and polystyrene foams are widely used as core materials. Plastics, such as glass-reinforced polyester, are frequently used as the skins for panels. Different skin materials are used such as metallic skins alone or in conjunction with plastic skins.
