Sexually transmitted diseases herpes

There are five main sexually transmitted diseases AIDS, gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes and genital candidiasis. AIDS is discussed in Chapter 17. 

When valacyclovir is used as suppressive therapy in immunocompetent individuals with genital herpes, the risk of heterosexual transmission to susceptible partners is reduced. Instruct patients to use safer sex practices with suppressive therapy (see current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Disease Treatment Guidelines). 

Acyclovir is useful in the treatment of herpes. Oral herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), and genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). More than 90 percent of the world s population is infected with the oral herpes virus, though there are many infected people who do not exhibit symptoms. Genital herpes is the most prevalent nondurable sexually transmitted disease. In the United States, there are about 30 million people infected with HSV-2 and an estimated 200,000 to 500,000 new cases each year.

Viruses have been implicated in the development of at least two cancers. Infection with the human papilloma virus is a major risk factor for cervical cancer, and like any sexually transmitted disease, the cancer is more common amongst those who have had numerous partners and is almost unknown in nuns. But the most well-established link is between Burkitt s lymphoma and the Epstein-Barr virus (one of the herpes viruses) in African countries. In developed countries, this virus causes glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis), and the different progress of the disease in Africans is apparently due to an immune system that is usually suppressed through a long-term assault by malaria parasites like Plasmodium falciparum. 

Any disease that is passed (tom one individual to another during sexual intercourse or other types of sexual activity. These diseases have b n traditionally referred to as venereal diseases. They include gonorrhoea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonor-rhoeae, syphilis, due to infection by the bacterium Treponema pallidum genital herpes, which Is caused by a herpesvirus and AIDS, resulting from infection with HIV, a retrovirus. The transmission of sexually transmitted diseases can be reduced by limiting the number of sexual partners and by the use of condoms (see birth control), which reduces the risk of contact with body fluids that harbour the microorganisms that cause these diseases.
