Sewers floor drains

Every house has some minimum penetration through the slab or foundation walls. The ones always present are water pipe entry and sewer pipe exit. Common additional penetrations are floor drains, sump holes, and air conditioner condensate drains. [Pg.1279]

It is usually advisable to blind or block an unused branch or lateral where it enters an active sewer. When welding is in progress near open catch basins, the usual procedure is to seal the catch-basin lid with sandbags or place a tarpaulin with a cover of sand over the lid. A sudden rush of liquids from equipment into the drainage system would cause compression of entrapped gases in the sewer ahead of the stream and a vacuum behind the stream. Such pulsation drains all the traps and permits permeation of odors and sewer gases. The breather system, by proper installation of vents, is always installed according to code. In order to prevent the back rush of liquids, a ball check is installed ahead of a condenser. Both check valve and subsequent trap should be accessible for cleanout. The bell of the trap extends down from the perforated or gridded floor screen and covers a portion of the drain pipe extending above the bottom of the drain pit. A chemical company began making pesticides in 1980. From that time until 2007 employees poured the waste water from the pesticide production down the floor drain. This untreated hazardous waste went directly into the city sewer system. In 2007 an ERA inspection identified this illegal practice. The supervisor of the operation was sent to prison for 6 months, followed by 6 months home confinement, and a fine of 100,000. The vice president of the company is facing a similar fate. [Pg.525]

The installation of a capture box will be required for those work place layouts where the floor drain is located in the same room as the sterilizer or in a room where workers are normally present. A capture box is a piece of equipment that totally encloses the floor drain where the discharge from the sterilizer is pumped. The capture box is to be vented directly to a non-recirculating or dedicated ventilation system. Sufficient air intake should be allowed at the bottom of the box to handle the volume of air that is ventilated from the top of the box. The capture box can be made of metal, plastic, wood or other equivalent material. The box is intended to reduce levels of EtO discharged into the work room atmosphere. The use of a capture box is not required if (1) The vacuum pump discharge floor drain is located in a well ventilated equipment or other room where workers are not normally present or (2) the water sealed vacuum pump discharges directly to a closed sealed sewer line (check local plumbing codes). [Pg.1149]

Stoneware is a dense ceramic usually coloured yellow to brown, the water absorption of which varies between Oand 4%, reaching 7 % in the case of tubes. It is used in the manufacture of drain and sewer pipes, floor tiles, chemical and kitchenware and electric insulators. The technological properties of the mixes permit manufacture of large objects.
