FIGURE 4.5 Representative spectrum examples of SELDI analysis of pancreatic juice samples bound to IMAC-3 cupper ProteinChip array. A peak of 16,570 Da (arrow) was present in the four pancreatic juice samples from patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PC4, PCS, PC 18, PC24) but absent in the four patients with other pancreatic diseases (IPMN islet cell tumor (ICT) serous cystadenoma (SC)). In the pancreas and ampulla, the glandular/ductal system is characterized and distinguished by mucin production. With the exception of centroacinar cells/intercalated ducts in the pancreas and the serous cystadenomas that presumably recapitulate this earliest component of the ductal system, virtually all glandular elements... [Pg.541]

Serous cystadenoma (SCA) is the only nonmucinous example of ductal neoplasia in the pancreas and, unlike other ductal tumors, has virtually no tendency for malignant transformation. It is also known to have a well-established association with von Hippel-Lindau (vHL) syndrome. iez... [Pg.552]

Serous cystadenomas account for up to 40% of all benign ovarian neoplasms. They show a peak incidence in the fourth and fifth decades and are in up to 20% bilateral. Mucinous cystadenomas account for 20%-25% of all benign ovarian neoplasms, and are bilateral in only 2%-3% of cases. Both are cystic lesions filled with water-like or... [Pg.219]

Mucinous cystadenomas tend to be multilocular and larger at the time of presentation than serous cystadenomas. They present with a mean size of 10 cm,but maybe as large as 30 cm [1]. [Pg.219]

The serous cystadenoma (formally known as microcys-tic cystadenoma) predominantly affects women in the sixth to seventh decade. Quite often, it is incidentally detected, when CT studies performed for clinical symptoms unrelated to the pancreas. Serous cystadenoma is a benign tumor, with no more than 10 cases of serous cystadenocarcinoma reported worldwide. Thus, in clinical practice there is no risk of maUgnant degeneration, which may direct clinical management of these tumors more toward foUow-up. [Pg.414]

The typical CT features of more common microcys-tic serous cystadenoma are multiple (usually more than six) small cysts that range from a few miUimeters up to 2 cm in size, which tend to give the lesion an inhomogeneous, hypodense pseudosolid appearance at contrast-enhanced CT (Sahani et al. 2005). Actually, there are no sohd nodules in serous cystadenoma present, but the multitude of tiny septations and cyst walls may give... [Pg.414]

Mucinous cystadenoma usually occur in women. In contrast to (the always benign) serous cystadenoma, mucinous tumors represent a histologic spectrum, ranging from adenoma, borderline tumor to non-invasive and invasive carcinoma. With advancing age, the histologic grade of the tumor tends to worsen. The CT appearance is always macrocystic (therefore the synonym... [Pg.415]
