Centroacinar cells

In the pancreas and ampulla, the glandular/ductal system is characterized and distinguished by mucin production. With the exception of centroacinar cells/intercalated ducts in the pancreas and the serous cystadenomas that presumably recapitulate this earliest component of the ductal system, virtually all glandular elements... 

Instead, it commonly expresses the markers of centroacinar-cell/intercalated duct system such as MUC6, as well as markers of clear cell tumorigenesis such as GLUT-1, HIL-la, and carbonic anhydrase IX. 

Energy can likewise be generated by means of fructose and ethanol oxidation. The partial pressure of oxygen falls from 13 % (centroacinar) to 6 % (perivenous) due to progressive oxygen consumption. Thus it is here that hypoxic cell damage can most frequently be expected. 

Liver biopsy may be required for diagnosis - unless there are any contraindications, (s. tab. 7.4) In order to detect the characteristic microvesicular (mainly centroacinar) fatty changes, fixation without alcohol and examination of the biopsy material in the form of a frozen section are necessary. (108) The hepatocytes are swollen and resemble so-called foam cells. The nucleus is pyknotic. The mitochondria are deformed, (s. fig. 31.9)... 

The centroacinar and duct cells secrete bicarbonate ions under the control of gastrointestinal hormones. The bicarbonate ions are formed by the action of carbonic anhydrase ... 

The pancreas possesses both endocrine and exocrine fnnctions. The islets of Langerhans, which contain the cells of the endocrine pancreas, secrete insnlin, glncagon, somatostatin, and other polypeptide hormones. The exocrine pancreas is composed of acini that secrete about 1 to 2 L/day of isotonic fluid that contains water, electrolytes, and pancreatic enzymes necessary for digestion. Bicarbonate is secreted primarily by the centroacinar (ductular) cells, and is the principal ion of physiologic importance. Pancreatic juice is delivered to the duodenum via the pancreatic ducts (Fig. 39-1) where the alkaline secretion (pH about 8.3) neutralizes gastric acid and provides an appropriate pH for maintaining the activity of pancreatic enzymes."...
