Benign ovarian neoplasm

A second, independent study repeated the visual inspection analysis and compared the sensitivities and specificities obtained using visual inspection and a precursor of the SCS analysis on the same data set.43 Biopsy samples of postmenopausal ovaries, benign ovarian neoplasms and ovarian cancers ( 0.5 g) were obtained during surgery. The histological types of these samples were normal (19), benign tumour (3), borderline tumour (3), serous carcinoma (13), endometroid carcinoma (17), mixed epithelial carcinoma (3), and small cell carcinoma (4). Serous cystadenomas account for up to 40% of all benign ovarian neoplasms. They show a peak incidence in the fourth and fifth decades and are in up to 20% bilateral. Mucinous cystadenomas account for 20%-25% of all benign ovarian neoplasms, and are bilateral in only 2%-3% of cases. Both are cystic lesions filled with water-like or... 

In our series of 308 patients, 158 proved to have invasive pelvic neoplasms. As described in Section 3,4,3, fewer than 1.4% of healthy adult females have serum Mn-SOD levels above 130 ng/ml. Only 7 of the 39 patients (17.9%) with benign ovarian tumors had Mn-SOD levels exceeding 130 ng/ml. In the nonovarian gynecological malignancies group, 9 out of 40 patients (22.5%) with uterine cervical cancer and 8 of 40 patients (20.0%) with endometrial cancer had Mn-SOD levels above 130 ng/ml (Table 5).

Carcinogenicity Oral contraceptives have been shown to decrease the incidence of endometrial and ovarian cancer. Their ability to induce other neoplasms is controversial. The production of benign tumors of the liver that may rupture and hemorrhage is rare.
