In the Philips total oxygen demand meter the zirconium oxide is specially prepared and is in the form of two series connected tubes or cells through which a nitrogen carrier gas is allowed to flow. The most common type of commercial pyrolysis equipment is the direct fired tubular heater in which the reacting material flows through several tubes connected in series. Experiments involving the release of radioactive carbon dioxide from MSMA-14C treated soils were conducted in a system consisting of two test tubes connected in series. One tube contained 5g of treated soil (at 10 and lOOppm of monosodium methane arsenic acid carbon dioxide while a second tube contained a trapping mixture, 2-methoxyethanol and monoethanolamine (7-10, v/v). Carbon dioxide-free air was passed over the soil and metabolic 14CO was collected in the trapping solution. The soils studied were Sharkey cldy, Hagerstown silty clay loam, Cecil sandy loam, and Dundee silty clay loam. For the manufacture of carbon disulphide on the large scale, the charcoal is contained in a large vertical cast-iron cylinder, ten to twelve feet high and from one to two feet in diameter. This cylinder is surrounded by brickwork and heated by a fire beneath. The sulphur is introduced through a hopper connected with a side tube at the base of the cylinder. The carbon disulphide vapour is led away from the top of the cylinder through a pipe, the end of which dips under water, where most of the product condenses. Detectors are not limited to solo use they can be hooked in series to get more information from the same sample. In a serial operation, be sure that the refractive index detector or electrochemical detector is the last in the line.
