Self-reliance

Figure 1.1 illustrates the four main goals of mentoring. In this respect it is important to note that developmental mentoring emphasizes self-reliance, learning and support more than sponsorship, whilst it is the other way round in sponsorship mentoring. 

Fostering self-reliance, self-confidence and a belief in their own potential within mentees. 

It is the mentor s role to evaluate whether the mentee shows signs of becoming dependent on the mentor. If this turns out to be the case, mentors must reassess their methods and apply those that encourage independence and self-reliance. 

Since the primary purpose of developmental mentoring is to foster self-reliance, dissolving the association tends to be less painful than in sponsorship mentoring.

Another part of the process of promoting client self-reliance is to teach the client how to become his or her own therapist. Throughout the therapeutic process, a cognitive behavioral therapist will be orienting the client to the model... 

On the other hand, the nature of these transactions— licensing, planning, supply and installation of complete plants, particularly in the fields of chemicals and steel—indicates that China is not wholly abandoning self-reliance. The critical role of agriculture cannot be overemphasized as an obvious axiom of the policy of self-reliance, which is the ability to feed its own population. Political slogans such as "Agriculture as Foundation" and "Industry Must Aid and Serve Agriculture" are just some indications of the primary importance accorded to agriculture. (A separate Ministry of Food was established on June 12, 1979, with Zhao Xinchu—full member of the 11th Central Committee of the CCP—as its first Minister.) Agricultural development will continue to be viewed as the fundamental basis for economic modernization, and the point of departure for pursuit of import substitution policies.
