Self-confidence

Fostering self-reliance, self-confidence and a belief in their own potential within mentees. 

It is not only mentees who expose themselves by disclosing their problems and weaknesses. Similarly, mentors can also make themselves vulnerable by sharing their wealth of experience with mentees, some of which may be humiliating. In order to expose failures and mistakes, mentors must possess a substantial amoimt of self-confidence. 

Furthermore, mentors are only human. They are therefore prone fo making the occasional mistake when advising their mentees. This, in turn, might result in criticisms from the mentee. A mentor must be able to accept these and other t) es of feedback in a non-defensive way, a reaction that is certainly promoted by a healthy self-confidence. 

Patronizing behaviour - even if a mentor has had more experience and acquired more knowledge than a mentee, there is no need to be patronizing or condescending. This will only serve to reinforce any potential insecurities that mentees might harbour, rather than help them build their self-confidence. In extreme cases, such behaviour might even lead to the premature break up of the relationship. 

Interrupting the mentee - the effect of interrupting mentees too early whilst they are attempting to solve a problem/make a decision has a similar effect to the one described above it also hinders the process of building self-confidence as well as the development of a mentee s analytical and problemsolving skills. 

Disinterest - a mentoring relationship will suffer if enthusiasm for and interest in the mentee is blatantly absent. However, faked interest is no good either since the mentee is bound to notice - it really must be genuine. Sincere interest motivates, creates openness, and inspires self-confidence within mentees it is also necessary in order to provide the level of support that they require. 

When appropriate, require that operators be capable of performing mechanical repairs of their own instruments. This is the simplest way of teaching instrumental function and greatly improves operator self-confidence. With the highly-computerized systems of today, it is likely that supplemental assistance from the manufacturer will be necessary for instrumental maintenance. 

This disorder usually causes a marked lowering of self-esteem and self-confidence with increased thoughts of pessimism, hopelessness, and helplessness. In the extreme, the person may feel excessively and unreasonably guilty. 

The largest drawback to the use of amphetamines is the often severe side effects that can occur. All amphetamines can cause nervousness, dry mouth, insomnia, anxiety, elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, and heart palpitations. Another side effect of amphetamines is artificially elevated feelings of self-confidence. Abusers of amphetamines have a false sense of well-being they feel like they are invincible and could conquer the world. ... 

Where there is hope for everybody is in getting together. But it s very difficult for people who are chemically sensitive to get together. Shyness, insecurity, not being able to communicate—I see it in so many chemically sensitive people. At one point I took classes in modeling and acting to try to develop my self-confidence because, although I didn t realize the cause at the time, my reactions to chemicals had made me a very shy and withdrawn kind of person. 

Cagliostro s extraordinary self-confidence led him to take on the most difficult medical or psychic challenges and to use the most improvised methods. In an exceptionally rare piece of self-testimony, he told a contemporary biographer that he cured a dangerous madman in Saint Petersburg in the following manner ...

Strong Self-Confidence / Healthy Ego Determination Optimism... 

Now this may sound obvious, but if you lack self-confidence -your lack of belief in yourself is your worst enemy. If you lack the belief system that you can achieve what you want, you sabotage any future effort. Confidence and self-esteem are closely related but actually different terms. In handwriting terms, I am guilty of lumping them together and referring to the trait interchangeably. 

Composer John Williams has many success traits. The long and high t-bars reveal his self-confidence. The extra tall t-stems show us he is full of pride and dignity. People with this level of pride tend to be sharp dressers and are concerned with their reputation. 

He shook his head. He was recovering his normal insouciant self-confidence already. Some people believe that they can lie their way out of anything. 

Ethanol produces central nervous system depression over a wide range of doses. Its effects are additive or sometimes more than additive with other central nervous system depressants. Symptoms often associated with acute alcohol intoxication include increase in self-confidence, loss of inhibitions, euphoria, and loss of judgment. With increasing doses motor and intellectual impairment become prominent. Chronic abuse of ethanol leads to severe liver impairment (see Chapter 35).
