Ion-selective electrodes can be incorporated in flow cells to monitor the concentration of an analyte in standards and samples that are pumped through the flow cell. As the analyte passes through the cell, a potential spike is recorded instead of a steady-state potential. The concentration of K+ in serum has been determined in this fashion, using standards prepared in a matrix of 0.014 M NaCl. ... [Pg.536]

The characteristic separation curve can be deterrnined for any size separation device by sampling the feed, and coarse and fine streams during steady-state operation. A protocol for determining such selectivity functions has been pubHshed (4). This type of testing, when properly conducted, provides the relationships among d K, and a at operating conditions. These three parameters completely describe a size separation device and can be used to predict the size distribution of the fine and coarse streams. [Pg.434]

Table 10 contains some selected permeabiUty data including diffusion and solubiUty coefficients for flavors in polymers used in food packaging. Generally, vinyUdene chloride copolymers and glassy polymers such as polyamides and EVOH are good barriers to flavor and aroma permeation whereas the polyolefins are poor barriers. Comparison to Table 5 shows that the large molecule diffusion coefficients are 1000 or more times lower than the small molecule coefficients. The solubiUty coefficients are as much as one million times higher. Equation 7 shows how to estimate the time to reach steady-state permeation t if the diffusion coefficient and thickness of a film are known. [Pg.492]

Water Transport. Two methods of measuring water-vapor transmission rates (WVTR) ate commonly used. The newer method uses a Permatran-W (Modem Controls, Inc.). In this method a film sample is clamped over a saturated salt solution, which generates the desired humidity. Dry air sweeps past the other side of the film and past an infrared detector, which measures the water concentration in the gas. For a caUbrated flow rate of air, the rate of water addition can be calculated from the observed concentration in the sweep gas. From the steady-state rate, the WVTR can be calculated. In principle, the diffusion coefficient could be deterrnined by the method outlined in the previous section. However, only the steady-state region of the response is serviceable. Many different salt solutions can be used to make measurements at selected humidity differences however, in practice,... [Pg.500]

The fact that batch processes are not carried out at steady state conditions imposes broad demands on the control system. The instrumentation and control system have to be selected to provide adequate control for a wide variety of operating conditions and a wide variety of processes. In addition, basic process control and shutdown systems have to deal with sequencing issues. This chapter presents issues and concerns related to safety of instrumentation and control in batch reaction systems, and provides potential solutions. [Pg.6]

I Shunt reactors These are provided as shown in Figure 24.23 to compensate for the distributed lumped capacitances, C , on EHV networks and also to limit temporary overvoltages caused during a load rejection, followed by a ground fault or a phase fault within the prescribed steady-state voltage limits, as noted in Table 24.3. They ab.sorb reactive power to offset the charging power demand of EHV lines (Table 24.2, column 9). The selection of a reactor can be made on the basis of the duty it has to perform and the compensation required. Some of the different types of reactors and their characteristics are described in Chapter 27. [Pg.798]

For these cases, the conservation statement is made around the outside of the catalyst. In steady-state, everything that is consumed or produced inside the catalyst must go through the outside boundary layer of the fluid surrounding the catalyst. In case of serious selectivity problems with a desired and reactive intermediate, the criterion should be calculated for that component. [Pg.76]

As the band dryer is a type zero system, and there are no integrators in the controller, steady-state errors must be expected. ITowever, the selection of the elements in the Q matrix, equation (9.90), focuses the control effort on control-... [Pg.294]

A teehnique that is a convenient source of radieals for study by EPR involves photolysis of a mixture of di-t-butyl peroxide, triethylsilane, and the alkyl bromide corresponding to the radieal to be studied. Photolysis of the peroxide gives t-butoxy radieals, whieh selectively abstract hydrogen from the silane. This reactive silicon radieal in turn abstracts bromine, generating the alkyl radieal at a steady-state eoncentration suitable for EPR study. [Pg.674]

In order to have effective exchange of air in important locations in a room, the age of the air in those locations should be low. The basis for comparison is the complete mixing scenario. That scenario gives the same age for any air volume selected in the room, identical to the nominal time constant for the ventilation airflow,. A steady-state scenario is assumed. See Sutcliffe for an overview of definitions related to age of air. The various air exchange efficiency indices are presented in Table 8.6. [Pg.628]

Many HVAC system engineering problems focus on the operation and the control of the system. In many cases, the optimization of the system s control and operation is the objective of the simulation. Therefore, the appropriate modeling of the controllers and the selected control strategies are of crucial importance in the simulation. Once the system is correctly set up, the use of simulation tools is very helpful when dealing with such problems. Dynamic system operation is often approximated by series of quasi-steady-state operating conditions, provided that the time step of the simulation is large compared to the dynamic response time of the HVAC equipment. However, for dynamic systems and plant simulation and, most important, for the realistic simulation... [Pg.1072]

The humidity and contaminant transport calculation is based on the previously calculated airflows, applying again the principle of mass conservation for the species under consideration. For each time step, the concentrations are calculated on the basis of the airflows, the source and sink strengths in the zones, and the concentration values at the previous time step. In contrast to the airflow calculation, which is a steady-state calculation at each time step, the contaminant transport calculation is dynamic. Therefore, the accuracy of the concentration results depends on the selected time-step interval. [Pg.1087]

Otherwise it has been shown that the accumulation of electrolytes by many cells runs at the expense of cellular energy and is in no sense an equilibrium condition 113) and that the use of equilibrium thermodynamic equations (e.g., the Nemst-equation) is not allowed in systems with appreciable leaks which indicate a kinetic steady-state 114). In addition, a superposition of partial current-voltage curves was used to explain the excitability of biological membranes112 . In interdisciplinary research the adaptation of a successful theory developed in a neighboring discipline may be beneficial, thus an attempt will be made here, to use the mixed potential model for ion-selective membranes also in the context of biomembrane surfaces. [Pg.237]

The sensor is an ammonium ion-selective electrode surrounded by a gel impregnated with the enzyme mease (Figme 6-11) (22). The generated ammonium ions are detected after 30-60 s to reach a steady-state potential. Alternately, the changes in the proton concentration can be probed with glass pH or other pH-sensitive electrodes. As expected for potentiometric probes, the potential is a linear function of the logarithm of the urea concentration in the sample solution. [Pg.181]
