Seismic zone

Seismic zone basis must be specified for structural design. Soil data is important, especially for cases where extensive use of foundation piling is required with major cost impact. Availability of aggregate or natural pond stabilization materials near the site will not be considered for early cost estimates, but can be kept in mind for future planning if the project is given the green light.

In a number of arcs (NE Jap an-Kurile s-Kamchatka, Aleutians, N. Chile), so-called double seismic zones are observed. Whereas the upper seismic zone correlates with the oceanic crust, it has been suggested (Seno and Yamanaka, 1996 Peacock, 2001) that the lower seismic zone corresponds to the limit of serpentine stability in the lower part of the oceanic lithosphere (see Figure 7). It has been argued that the lower seismic zone earthquakes are triggered by reactivation of ancient faults through fluid saturation, where the fluids derive from serpentine dehydration.

A large amount of carpet waste is disposed of in landfills each year. This not only poses economical and environmental problems to the industry, it also represents a severe waste of resources because the waste material can prove to be valuable for construction applications. This study focused on the use of carpet waste fibers in fiber reinforced concrete and demonstrated that such reinforcement can effectively improve the shatter resistance, toughness, and ductility of concrete. Performance enhancement has also been observed in the drying shrinkage test. Such improvements in concrete performance is especially beneficial for concrete structures in seismic zones as the increased toughness could improve the reliability and shock resistance of the structures.

Tujague [70] suggested specific improvements beyond what has been normal practice. These include providing an enclosure for the delivery vehicle, support for the unloading hose, and design of the piping supports for seismic zone four. 

An important consideration when specifying a bulk storage silo is the seismic zone in which it will be installed. These zones vary from zone 1, where there is no earthquake activity, to zone 4 in southern California where there is a serious threat. In zones 3 and 4, tank construction, foundation, and anchor bolt requirements are designed to resist the higher loads. 

Note Foundation designs should always be approved by a local architect or engineer familiar with local codes, site soil conditions, and seismic zone requirements. 

Many locations are in seismic zones that denote the likelihood and severity of potential earthquakes. It is important to know the seismic zone for any location and to follow the latest designs for buildings and stmctures for such zones to ensure the greatest degree of stmctural stability and to achieve the minimum amount of damage from an earthquake. For locafions subject to stmctural property changes in soils or subject to potential tsunamis, other design considerafions may apply. 

Seismicity and soil type The level of seismicity is considered, based on the seismic zone map and soil types in the Turkish seismic code (TEC 2007). 

Performance scores of buildings are calculated based on the seismicity of the building s location and the parameters reflecting its properties.
