Earthquakes seismic zoning

Occurrence of an active seismic zone beneath the eastern Aeolian arc, defined by deep focus earthquakes extending to a depth of about 500 km until the Campania area (Fig. 10.2) ... [Pg.313]

In a number of arcs (NE Jap an-Kurile s-Kamchatka, Aleutians, N. Chile), so-called double seismic zones are observed. Whereas the upper seismic zone correlates with the oceanic crust, it has been suggested (Seno and Yamanaka, 1996 Peacock, 2001) that the lower seismic zone corresponds to the limit of serpentine stability in the lower part of the oceanic lithosphere (see Figure 7). It has been argued that the lower seismic zone earthquakes are triggered by reactivation of ancient faults through fluid saturation, where the fluids derive from serpentine dehydration. [Pg.1840]

An important consideration when specifying a bulk storage silo is the seismic zone in which it will be installed. These zones vary from zone 1, where there is no earthquake activity, to zone 4 in southern California where there is a serious threat. In zones 3 and 4, tank construction, foundation, and anchor bolt requirements are designed to resist the higher loads. [Pg.480]

Many locations are in seismic zones that denote the likelihood and severity of potential earthquakes. It is important to know the seismic zone for any location and to follow the latest designs for buildings and stmctures for such zones to ensure the greatest degree of stmctural stability and to achieve the minimum amount of damage from an earthquake. For locafions subject to stmctural property changes in soils or subject to potential tsunamis, other design considerafions may apply. [Pg.108]

Additionally, post-earthquake examinations of RC buildings in several countries located in high seismicity zones showed also that one of the weakest links in the lateral load-resisting system is the beam-column joint. That is, in RC frames, the beam-column connection is one of the critical components in the lateral load path. Column load is vertically transmitted through the... [Pg.518]

The Furget Sound area to the west of Hanford, a part of Montana near Helena to the east, and coastal California to the southwest is classed as Zone III areas (areas where destructive earthquakes have occurred, and mi( t reasonably be expected at any future time) Figure shows the seismic zones in contiguous, continental United States ... [Pg.74]

A recent study, that is still in progression, on seismic risk perception showed that in Italy, 9 of 10 citizens underestimate the risk coming from living in a seismic zone classified by the competent authorities with number 1, where major earthquake may occur. To go in details, in a sample of 5,585 people interviewed in a time span of 6 months (from January 2013 to June 2013), 86 % underestimate the hazard in zone 1, and 70 % in zone 2. Another important aspect of the research is how citizens get informed about earthquake risk in their area. A surprising result is that even if the source of information to which the majority of the population rely on is the Civil Protection DepartmenL the citizens who get more information from the web seem to have a most appropriate risk perception (Crescimbene et al. 2013). [Pg.86]

Some destmctive earthquakes motivated several communities to adopt codes with different percentages for the seismic coefficient C. Later the equivalent static lateral force was based on the seismic zone factor, building period, building weight, and lateral resisting system type. These factors are still being refined and used to estimate the equivalent lateral force (Mitchell et al. 2010). [Pg.1002]

The majority of destructive, historical earthquakes in Iceland have taken place within the South Iceland Seismic Zone. The zone has been defined by destruction areas of historical earthquakes, Holocene surface mptures, and instru-mentally determined epicenters (Figs. 2 and 3). It is oriented E-W and is 10-15 km wide. Destmction areas of individual earthquakes and surface faulting show, however, that each event is associated with faulting on N-S striking planes, perpendicular to the main zone. The overall left-lateral transform motion across the zone thus appears to be accommodated by right-lateral... [Pg.1463]

A third zone, the Dalvik Zone, is indicated by scattered seismicity about 30 km south of the Husavik-Flatey Faults (Fig. 5). Earthquakes as large as Ms 7 have occurred in this zone, but it lacks clear topographic expression. In spite of rather clear alignment of epicenters, the Dalvik Zone is not seen as a throughgoing fault on the surface. A common feature of all three seismic zones is the occurrence of earthquakes on transverse structures, similar to that observed in the South Iceland Seismic Zone and the Reykjanes... [Pg.1468]
