In the event of a decline in sea level, the supratidal zone will move seaward, causing evaporites to deposit on top of old lagoonal sediments. When sea level rises back, it drowns these evaporites. These low-amplitude fluctuations in sea level build up laminated sediments in which layers of biogenic oozes and organic-rich muds alternate with evaporites.

In the south of Moldova, the Karangatian epoch corresponds [8] to the lagoonal sediments of the second terrace of the Prut and Danube rivers they contain one or two layers with shells of Caspian didacnas separated by a layer of lacustrine deposits. 

The results of two investigations from two diverse locations provided evidence that this distribution ratio might be due to reversible sorption-desorption reactions. Scientists at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) equilibrated filtered Lake Michigan water with sediments that had been contaminated with Pu ten years earlier. As many as nine extractions on the same portions of sediment produced essentially identical values(15). Noshkin has observed that the concentrations of plutonium in the waters of Enewetak remain relatively constant although there is a continual replacement of water at an estimated residence time of 144 days (16). The concentration corresponds well with that predicted from the experimental distribution ratio between lagoon sediment and water. 

In the benthic realm, working in the framework of the ENCORE coral reef research program in Austraha, Koop et al. (2001) reported stimulation of lagoon sediment N2 fixation by additions of phosphate suggesting sediment N2 fixation in carbonate systems may also be Hmited by phosphorus as earher observed for sea-grasses (Short et al, 1990).

The atmospheric tests The radioactive material resulting from the atmospheric tests is essentially all residual material from the four barge tests there was very little local fallout from the explosion of any device suspended from a balloon, since the fireball did not touch the surface and radioactive material was drawn up into the atmosphere. Most of the residual material is plutonium found in the lagoon sediments immediately underneath where the barge tests were conducted, remains of the nuclear cores of the test devices. There is also present in the environment of the atolls global fallout from atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by other states, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. 

Bourlat et al. (1995) have presented results on the plutonium radioactivity levels in Mururoa lagoon water during the 1985-1991 period. The low radioactivity levels recorded, from 0.01 to 1.5 Bq/m are due to the slow solubilization of plutonium deposited in lagoon sediments following atmospheric experiments which took place from 1966 to 1974. The average concentrations of the lagoon water decrease from one year to the next. Since the Mururoa lagoon is open to the ocean, plutonium radioactivity traces are also detectable in the immediate vicinity of the atoll.

After being transferred downward, part of the major elements will be involved in recycling, and the other part will be eventually deposited. Except for the molecular ratio of Br/I, all the molecular ratios of other cognation elements in SPM were lower that those in the lagoon sediments. 

Results of the two year monitor showed that the average X S(—II) of the pore water from in-reef lagoon sediments was much higher than that from off-reef sediments. in-reef lagoon pore water was higher by about 2...
