Seasoned Veterans

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 protects against employment discrimination based on age. However, aging Americans who remain in the work force, either by choice or necessity, must be prepared to deal with a number of work-related issues. The civil engineering organizations that employ them need to be aware of the difficulties faced by seasoned veterans who have contributed many years of service to the profession. 

The negative perceptions by a youth-oriented culture of old age place these workers in a potentially oppressive simation with younger, more powerful professionals. 

Older employees have the added responsibility of adjusting to and accepting inter-generational differences in communication, social behaviors, and work habits. As a result, older employees may resent younger engineers

Introduction to Dislocations by D. Hull and D. J. Bacon, Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, Oxford England, 1984. Ostensibly, this book is aimed at an audience uninitiated in the subject of dislocations. However, this may be deceptive since there are a variety of interesting discussions that are of interest even to seasoned veterans.

Preparative chemistry is the heart of chemistry. The goal of Inorganic Syntheses is to provide both the neophyte and the seasoned veteran with safe and reliable methods to prepare useful compounds. The raison d etre of Inorganic Syntheses is to serve as a valuable treasure trove of precursors to yet undiscovered compounds and to demonstrate practical techniques to the undergraduate student. It is not to be a repository for the exotic, easily forgotten compounds that have no practical use. The inclusion of useful compounds only is an admirable goal and one that the Editor and the Editorial Board have striven valiantly to attain, for the utility of a particular synthesis is often in the eyes of the beholder. It is my sincere hope that prospective authors who may read this will keep in mind that utility of the product and safety of the procedure must be considered to be equally important prerequisites for publication in Inorganic Syntheses. 

One of the most important and comprehensive summaries of the mineralogy of lake sediments is that of Jones Bowser (1978). Although this overview concentrates mainly on the deposits of freshwater lakes, nonetheless, it provides all the essential background information and fundamental concepts necessary for neophytes as well as seasoned veteran paleolimnologists. Here s a hypothetical game example You lead a SWAT team. On your team is a seasoned Veteran, as well as a Rookie. The truth is, the Rookie is braver and a better shot than the Veteran. The Veteran, however, is a smarter tactician and less likely to get the group killed.

As before, they have risen to the occasion and prepared pedagogically driven chapters with the novice in mind. 

When the policy or procedure is in effect, enforcement is usually through disciplinary action. Discipline must be consistent, or the policy or procedure will lose its power. Depending on the severity of a policy violation, progressive discipline provides a level of punishment commensurate with the violation. For example, a first offense may result in a one-day suspension, a second offense in a one-week suspension, and a third violation in termination. In such a case, two employees could get a different punishment for the same conduct. Another consideration may be the seniority of employees. Discipline may be more severe for a seasoned veteran than for a new employee. Some policy violations are so severe as to warrant immediate termination. These are usually reserved for those violations that could result in death or serious injury to others, or those relating to matters of integrity. Embezzling money from the organization may not create a risk of injury, but the nature of the violation would warrant dismissal. 

The new hire may have a clean slate as far as the new job is concerned, but even if the open job is not the applicant s first real job, he or she does not come without some baggage from previous employers, school experience, or general life experiences. For our discussion, the new hire is going to have a cleaner slate and be more receptive to change than the seasoned veterans with high seniority who are set in their ways. 

New program implementation and the seasoned veteran can sometimes mix as well as oil and water. Just as the new hire is expecting change, so can the seasoned veteran be unwilling to change. The situation can become even more tenuous if your company culture has tried to implement programs in the past that were not successful. The less success that... 

Large companies can enjoy the economies of scale. As the large company grooms and trains supervisory staff, they probably have more seasoned veterans within their staff to mentor and train supervisors. The small company typically does not have that pool of seasoned management to fill in the gaps.

Most business, government, academic, and volunteer organizations have gold, sometimes not mined, beneath their feet in the form of experts. These experienced personnel understand client, owner, customer, and stakeholder requirements or how to determine them. Early participation by these seasoned individuals leverages their knowledge. Use you most experienced personnel in a prospective, preventive mode and not in a retrospective, remedial mode. While these veterans can usually find deficiencies near the end of a project they can also offer advice, at the beginning of a project, to avoid those deficiencies. The cost of prevention will almost always be less than the cost of remediation.
