Commission. The work in this project will start in April 2003 and will continue for three years. One of the objectives is the development of a gas fired adsorption heat pump coupled to an underground storage system. That means the size of the sorption storage system is reduced significantly, a large number of cycles is possible and the actual seasonal storage is now realized by the UTES system. The economics of this concept are expected to be much better.

The determination of the necessary gas storage capacity is based upon the approach of primarily using the storage as security of supply in case of disruption of the gas imports from Russia. Secondarily, the gas storage could potentially be used for both security of supply and for seasonal load balancing to match peak gas demand in extreme situations caused by several days of extremely low temperatures. But there is less need for seasonal storage because there is surplus capacity in the import pipelines and the transmission system to handle today s gas consumption as well as the gas demand projected in 2020 and in fact beyond that point.

As derived from the analysis presented in this table, the most significant total annualised cost factor comes from the fuel cell, which accounts for 48% of the total cost of Fair Isle s wind-hydrogen autonomous power, followed by wind turbines, which contribute approximately 36% of total annualised costs. Due to lack of seasonal storage for hydrogen in this system, the electrolyser and hydrogen storage tank are relatively small and therefore are considered as minor cost factors for this system. 

As mentioned before, this system provides power to the mountain cabin only during April, May, July, August and September. Therefore, we can conclude that this is an autonomous power system with a good potential for seasonal storage of hydrogen (if this is necessary to cover power demand of the cabin) when a renewable energy source, namely a wind turbine, is incorporated.
