Schneider studies

Radiation-Induced Polymerization. Polymerization induced by irradiation is initiated by free radicals and by ionic species. On very pure vinyl monomers, D. J. Metz demonstrated that ionic polymerization can become the dominating process. In Chapter 12 he postulates a kinetic scheme starting with the formation of ions, followed by a propagation step via carbonium ions and chain transfer to the vinyl monomer. C. Schneider studied the polymerization of styrene and a-methylstyrene by pulse radiolysis in aqueous medium and found results similar to those obtained in conventional free-radical polymerization. She attributes this to a growing polymeric benzyl type radical which is formed partially through electron capture by the styrene molecule, followed by rapid protonation in the side chain and partially by the addition of H and OH to the double vinyl bond. J. A. Fleming and J. Dewar found that the dielectric constant of water is raised a little by potassium chromate, and at —88-5°, the dielectric constant of the frozen mixture is between 3 and 10—when with ice alone, the constant is 2-5. W. Schneider studied the piezoelectric effect P. Walden, and A. Heydweiller, the electrical conductivity of aq. soln. P. Walden gave for the eq. conductivity, A mhos, at 8°, with a gram-equivalent of the salt in v litres,... [Pg.134]

Konrad Schneider - Institute of Polymer Research Dresden. Dr. Schneider studied Physics and Polymer Physics at the Institute of Technology Leuna-Merseburg and got there his PhD in 1984 in the field of glass transition of amorphous polymers. Since 1984, he works in the Institut fUr Technologic der Polymere and later the Institute of Polymer Research Dresden in various experimental fields, mainly the field of mechanical characterization of polymers and composites on different levels. He is the Head of the Department Mechanics and Fibre Formation. [Pg.353]

For the preparation of larger amounts of p3rrylium salts the method of Baeyer and Villiger was unsuitable. Therefore, the discovery by Dilthey" of new convenient methods for preparing aryl-substituted pyrylium salts in 1916 was an important event. By the studies of Dilthey, and a little later, of Schneider, many reactions of aryl-substituted pyrylium salts were discovered. [Pg.248]

TKase is a homodimeric protein with a subunit of about 70kDa. The X-ray structures of TKase of E. colif S. cerevisiaeX Leishmania mexicana and mize have been solved. In addition, the crystal structures of a number of site-directed mutants have been determined. Schneider and co-workers have reported a series of studies in which they have mutated important residues of active site of TKase to elucidate the reaction mechanism and explain the origin of the stereospecificity of the C—C bond-forming process (Table The conserved... [Pg.329]
