The films formed in these covalent layer-by-layer assembly procedures are similar to the ionic assemblies prepared by other layer-by-layer self assembly procedures. Unlike the more defined Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer assemblies that have well defined layers, the layers of electrophilic polymer and nucleophihc polymer are intermixed to an extent. Similar effects are seen in ionic layer-by-layer assembhes. [Pg.33]

For the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers, a Joyce-Loebl Model 4 trough was used. The polymer was spread from a chloroform solution at a concentration of approximately 1 mg/ml. The de-ionized water subphase was passed through an activated carbon adsorber and then distilled in a glass still. Before deposition the... [Pg.178]

Non-centrosymmetric Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers were also prepared by alternate deposition of nitrophenylhydrazone (dye FA06) and trimethylsilylcel-lulose (TMSC) [85]. Such waveguides had a relatively low loss of 3.5 dB cm 1 at 633 nm and the nonlinear material exhibited a reasonable of 19 pm V. With a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm, a conversion efficiency of 10 4, corresponding to slope of the order of 10 8% W em 1 was demonstrated and further work was proposed to diminish the optical losses. [Pg.108]

Phillips (19) formed a reference electrode by coating a noble metal with a Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer of calcium palmitate and used it to detect the presence of a polar vapor in dry atmospheres by its adsorption on an uncoated metal electrode. Water vapor and oxygen were carefully excluded from the surrounding atmosphere, since either gas penetrated the multilayer coating on the reference electrode. This report describes the preparation, properties, and several applications of a more general and useful type of reference electrode. [Pg.104]
