Safety instruction

It is often necessary to carry out some reagent preparation. This may seem a trivial aspect of laboratory work, but its importance is often underestimated. It is a common source of error and it is worth taking a little bit of time to ensure reagents and, in particular, standards are correctly made-up. Very simple principles are involved. Follow any instructions available, implement safety instructions, use equipment properly and check that you know what you are doing before you start.

The TGA apparatus becomes very hot and caution should be exercised while using it. In order to safely handle volatile materials or polymer decomposition products which may be irritating and harmful, it is suggested that a gas bubbler be constructed to scrub the gaseous effluent from the instrument (Fig. 15.5). Care must be taken to prevent excessive gas pressure from building up if the system is being operated under vacuum or with gases, both inert and flammable. Consult the instrument operations manual for any special safety instructions.

Safety instructions have been enlarged and added, and materials considered hazardous have been eliminated. Chapter 10 provides detailed information about possible health hazards and methods to eliminate these hazards. 

Before attempting to mix any formula, read and follow all handling and safety instructions listed for the chemicals. Always wear protective equipment such as safety glasses, a plastic apron, rubber gloves, and a mask to avoid allergic reactions, burns, and irritation to the skin or lungs.

Detailed instructions for the use of the Raman spectrometer will be provided in the laboratory. It is particularly important to follow all safety instructions regarding the use of the excitation laser, since serious eye damage can occur if the beam, or even a small reflection from it, should strike the eye. Safety goggles must be worn when inserting samples in the beam and when adjusting the opties for maximum signal. 

The safety system outlined here takes care of the equipment and the product during freeze-drying, it does not show the safety instructions for the personnel. The layout of the system is one of many possibilities and cannot be a general guideline.

Important reminder Please refer to the safety instructions in your laboratory for the safe handling and storage of all solvents and chemicals. Always wear safety glasses and protective clothing when working in the laboratory avoid skin contact with chemicals and solvents (wear protective gloves ). 

Operation safety instructions for normal operation and in an accident... 

Many operating manuals are cocooned in a cloud of soft materials such as introductions, summaries, generic safety instructions, and company mission statements. None of these materials help the operator do his or her work more efficiently or more safely instead they pad the manual with material that gets in the way, thereby increasing the time it takes find the pertinent instructions. In response to this concern, the minimalist approach eliminates these soft materials. An operating manual should tell the operator how to operate the unit—no more, no less. AU other material should be located in other documents.
