Traditionally, in pursuit of their structure-activity relationships, medicinal chemists had focused almost exclusively on finding compounds with greater and greater potency. However, these SARs often ended up with compounds that were unsuitable for development as pharmaceutical products. These compounds would be too insoluble in water, or were not orally bioavailable, or were eliminated too quickly or too slowly from mammalian bodies. Pharmacologists and pharmaceutical development scientists for years had tried to preach the need for medicinal chemists to also think about other factors that determined whether a compound could be a medicine. Table 1.1 lists a number of factors that determine whether a potent compound has what it takes to become a drug. Experimentally, it was difficult to quantitate these other factors. Often, the necessary manpower resources would not be allocated to a compound until it had already been selected for project team status. [Pg.35]

During the cleanse, it is best to avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea or sedatives such as alcohol. Avoid smoking. A calm emotional body is also best during this time. The main business of most chemical companies is to manufacture products by means of controlled chemical reactions. The reactivity that makes chemicals useful can also make them hazardous. Chemical reactions are usually carried out without mishap, but sometimes they get out of control because of problems such as the wrong or contaminated raw material being used, changed operating conditions, unanticipated time delays, failed equipment, incompatible materials of construction, or loss of temperature control. Such mishaps can be worse if the chemistiy under both normal and abnormal conditions is not fully understood. Therefore, it is essential that chemical process designers and operators understand the nature of the reactive materials andchemistry involved and what it takes to control intended reactions and avoid unintended reactions throughout the entire life cycle of a process facility. [Pg.25]

Step 2 involves knowing what properties turn a macromolecule into a receptor. All receptors may be macromolecules, but all macromolecules are certainly not receptors. Receptor macromolecules are frequently proteins or glycoproteins. Certain properties must be present if a macromolecule is going to have what it takes to be a druggable target. The receptor macromolecule must be intimately connected with the disease in question, but not integral to the normal biochemistry of a wide range of processes. [Pg.6]

The written exam is your first opportunity to show that you have what it takes to be a firefighter. As such, it is extremely important. Candidates who don t pass the written exam don t go any farther in the selection process. Furthermore, the written exam score often figures into applicants rank on the eligibility list in some cases, this score by itself determines your rank, whereas in others it is combined with other scores, such as physical ability or oral board scores. In those places, a person who merely passes the written exam with a score of, say, 70, is unlikely to be hired when there are plenty of applicants with scores in the 90s. The practice exam that follows is another type of test often used to see if firefighter candidates have what it takes to do the job. A test like this mostly tries to assess whether you have what it takes to learn the job it tests some of the basic skills you need to be able to do well in your firefighter training program. This practice exam includes five areas reading comprehension, verbal expression, logical reasoning, mathematics, and mechanical aptitude. [Pg.105]

Leading is a concept that is hedged about with a considerable amount of mystique. Leadership qualities are often thought of as something you either have or do not have. There have been attempts to look at leadership in other ways, for example as a function of the task or situation, but these approaches can still leave managers bemused as to whether they have what it takes to lead in their particular circumstances. The purpose of this chapter is to show how leading can be a feasible activity for any manager. [Pg.69]

Of course, values statements may be useful to try to change yourself, and you may write a value that you would like to emphasize in the future.
