Safety boats

Many contractors considered that safety boats often provided a false sense of security. Their benefit in calm sea conditions was considered marginal while they often could not be launched or operate safely in severe swell conditions when they would provide the most benefit. Their very existence may put the safety boat operatives in an unsafe environment. Those consulted considered that a risk assessment should be undertaken and, where possible, mitigation measures should be put in to avoid operatives falling in the water in the first place rather than providing a safety boat. [Pg.92]

A beach nourishment scheme was imdertaken at a location where no local quay was available to provide ready all-tide access for work boats or safety boats. The nearest such access was several hours steaming away. Local site communications between shore and floating plant developed initially by using a beach-launched work boat. Tragically, the work boat was overturned during launching in unexceptional conditions and both of the crew drowned. [Pg.119]

Influence on priorities may come from media publicity about a particular issue, e.g. the supposed effects of electric fields. However, the occupational health and safety budget must be used effectively, and clear-headedness kept about putting the effort and money into the biggest risks. You caimot ignore concerns workers have as a result of scare tactics, but you can address them logically and keep the safety boat on course. [Pg.235]

In general, solid solutes should be weighed on weighing paper or plastic weighing boats, using an analytical or top-loading balance. Liquids are more conveniently dispensed by volumetric techniques however, this assumes that the density is known. If a small amount of a liquid is to be weighed, it should be added to a tared flask by means of a disposable Pasteur pipet with a latex bulb. The hazardous properties of all materials should be known before use and the proper safety precautions obeyed. [Pg.19]

In this method the substance is either placed in a boat or inserted from a weighing bottle along with CuO powder. If a boat is used it should be filled to the brim with ignited CuO powder and placed in the tube next to the reduced Cu spiral. A rapid stream of C02 is blown through the tube to remove air. The CuO end of the tube is heated and the stream of C02 cut down to as slow a rate as possible with safety. This rate must be determined by practical experiment. If it is too quick, then the blank will show a fairly large amount of air out of proportion to the volume of N to be measured. On the other hand, if the rate is too slow, a suck-back... [Pg.466]

Dr. Wade s interest in forensic science has led him to testify as an expert witness in court cases involving drugs and firearms, and he has worked as a police firearms instructor, drug consultant, and boating safety officer. He also enjoys repairing and restoring old violins and bows, which he has done professionally for many years. [Pg.4]

Arguably, the first time a new employee undertakes an activity, the activities normal and known safe risks, might increase an individual s safety risk simply because the new employee has never undertaken the activity before. For example, an individual piloting a boat into a port for the first few times is probably exposed to more risk from rocks at the harbor entrance, compared to the risk exposure of subsequent visits to the harbor. Chapter 3 explains in detail the namre of experience, its distinction from the label experienced, and the limited ability of experience to transfer from one situation (job) to another. Therefore, it is very important for organizations to realize that even the normal and expected safety risks associated with a job will initially have heightened risk for a new employee. The new... [Pg.42]

Many risks people are subjected to can cause health problems or death. Precautions should be taken based on what is practical, logical, and useful. However, those involved in laws and regulations, as well as the public and, particularly, the news media, should recognize that there is Acceptable Risk. This is the concept that has developed in connection with toxic substances, food additives, air and water pollution, fire and related environmental concerns, and so on. It can be defined as a level of risk at which a seriously adverse result is highly unlikely to occur but it cannot be proven whether or not there is 100% safety. In these cases, it means living with the reasonable assurance of safety and acceptable uncertainty. This concept will always exist. Note the use of automobiles, aircrafts, boats, lawnmowers, food, medicine, water, and the air we breathe. Practically all elements around us encompass some level of uncertainty. Otherwise, life as we know it would not exist. Many products and environmental factors are not perfect and never will be perfect. [Pg.761]

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)—Any type of clothing or device that puts a barrier between the worker and the hazard (e.g., safety goggles, gloves, boats, hard hats, and so on). [Pg.309]
