During the summer, remove excess blanket weed twist it around a stick or rake it out. Free-floating plants such as duckweed can be lifted out with a sieve. Leave any debris or plant matter on the pond side overnight, to allow creatures to escape back into the pond, then add it to your compost pile. 

Let floating plant foliage cover at least half and no more than two-thirds of the surface to shade the water.

Emergent and floating plants, like some land plants, have a thick outer layer on their leaves and stems which hinders herbicide absorption. Submergent plants have a very thin outer layer on their leaves and stems and are very susceptible to herbicide injury. 

Finally, as a qualitative quasi-scientific example, consider the classical evolution of a pond (Dashnowski 1912). A newly formed pond is simple with little life. Then algae appear followed by floating plants, submersed plants and finally emersed plants appear creating the mature pond where there is a maximum of incomparable plant-types present. However, the evolution of the pond does not stop there. As plants die, they sink to the bottom - most densely at the edge - reducing the size and complexity of the pond. This continues until the pond disappears entirely, returning to a simpler state. 

Floating plants rest their leaves on the surface of the water and help to provide shade and cover. Examples are yellow yellow pond lily (Nuphar lutea),UoQb. (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae), ribbon-leaved pondweed (Potamogeton natans), and water soldier (Stratiotes abides). 

Duckweed is a minute floating plant with a wide natural geographic range. The fronds attain a maximum of 0.4 inches in length and width several elongated roots hang from the underside of each frond. However, the plants are susceptible to damage by wind in unprotected open water areas, and productivity even under favorable conditions is far inferior to that of water hyacinth.
