RUTH study

RUTH) study is a trial specifically designed to clarify the effect of raloxifene on the risk of CHD. The study had included 10,101 women from 26 countries at the closure of the inclusion period, August 2000 (Mosca et al. 2001a). Results from the trial remain to be reported.

Finally, the RUTH study (Raloxifene Use for the Heart)38 was a placebo-controlled clinical trial following over 10,000 postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease (CHD) or with multiple risk factors for CHD.44 16 This trial demonstrated 44% reduced incidence of invasive breast cancer versus placebo, with 0.6% absolute risk reduction,47 thus confirming the findings from MORE and CORE, while also demonstrating that raloxifene did not increase or decrease risk for coronary events or stroke. However, there was an increase in stroke mortality and incidence of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) as compared to placebo, already seen in MORE, which resulted in a recommendation that raloxifene should not be used for the prevention or reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease.21... 

Ruths and Granick [95] have studied the self-adhesion of several monolayers and adsorbed polymers onto mica. For loose-packed monolayers, the adhesion, in excess of a constant value observed at low rate, increased as a power law with the square root of the separation rate. In the case of adsorbed diblocks, the excess adhesion increased linearly with logarithmic separation rate. The time effects were ascribed to interdigitation and interdiffusion between the contacting layers.

The release of aroma compounds in the mouth during eating is primarily determined kinetically, rather than thermodynamically, because of the processes occurring when food is consumed. The model-mouth system was developed to study in vitro-like aroma release and considers the bolus volume, volume of the mouth, temperature, salivation, and mastication (van Ruth et al., 1994). Volatile compounds in the effluent of the model mouth are collected on porous polymers, such as Tenax TA. Alternatively, the effluent can be measured on-line by direct mass spectrometry techniques. The model mouth can be used to study the effects of food composition and structure on aroma release, as well as the influence of oral parameters related to eating behavior.
