Rugged operations

Adsorbent Life. Long term stability under rugged operating conditions is an important characteristic of an adsorbent. By their nature 2eohtes are not stable in an aqueous environment and must be specially formulated to enhance their stabiUty in order to obtain several years of service. Polymeric resins do not suffer from dissolution problems. However, they are prone to chemical attack (52). 

A number of developments have increased the importance of capillary electrophoretic methods relative to pumped column methods in analysis. Interactions of analytes with the capillary wall are better understood, inspiring the development of means to minimize wall effects. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been standardized to the point of being useful as a routine technique. Incremental improvements in column coating techniques, buffer preparation, and injection techniques, combined with substantive advances in miniaturization and detection have potentiated rugged operation and high capacity massive parallelism in analysis.

Portable or fixed mixers up to 5hp normally use propellers and run at either direct drive speeds of 1,150 or l,750rpm or at single reduction gear drive speeds between 300 and 420 rpm. They may either be clamped on the rim of open tanks or mounted with a fixed assembly for open or closed tank operation. These mixers are the most economical and are usually used in tanks without baffles. They are rugged and long-lasting. 

In ae off-line eonverters, aluminum eleetrolytie eapaeitors are used as the input filter eapaeitor. They have proven to be more rugged than any other type of eapaeitor in the hazardous environment existing on the ae line. Choosing the final eapaeitor depends mostly upon the expeeted operating temperature range, quality level, and ease dimensions. 

Snubbers are passive networks that delay the risetime of the voltage waveform. Historieally, snubbers have been used to keep power deviees within their forward- and reverse-biased safe operating areas (FBSOA and RBSOA) or to eontrol RF emissions from the power supply. They are essentially lossy tank eireuits (L-C eireuits with R). Using them offered more of an advantage than the loss ineurred. Semieonduetor eomponents are more rugged today and the traditional need for the RFC snubber for proteetion has lessened, but oeea-sionally a snubber is still needed. 

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyzers can be used for industrial applications and m situ measurements in addition to conventional laboratory use. Industrial instruments are transportable, rugged and relatively simple to calibrate and operate. They are capable of analyzing many gas components and determining their concentrations, practically continuously. FTIR analyzers are based on the spectra characterization of infrared light absorbed by transitions in vibrational and rotational energy levels of heteroatomic molecules. 

Methods developed for on-line technological control have to be tested for the variation of the product composition due to process variations. However, if rugged analytical procedures are developed these multidimensional methods may only require minimal attention during on-line operation. Multidimensional chromatography for the analysis of complex polymer and industrial samples offers chromatogra-phers high productivity and efficiency and is an excellent alternative to off-line methods. 

Macrocyclic glycopeptides. The first of these CSPs - based on the cavity of the antibiotic vancomycin bound to silica - was introduced by Armstrong [25]. Two more polycyclic antibiotics teicoplanin and ristocetin A, were also demonstrated later. These selectors are quite rugged and operate adequately in both normal-phase and reversed-phase chromatographic modes. However, only a limited number of such selectors is available, and their cost is rather high. 

Marine boilers are not merely land boilers adapted for use at sea. They must be specially designed because apart from low head, light weight, room for inspection and maintenance in a confined area, and a wide load range, they are also required to operate in very adverse sea conditions and even during military operations. This means that marine boilers must be extremely rugged and able to absorb vibration and various shock forces.

In very large reactor plants, the need exists to monitor neutron flux in various portions of the core on a continuous basis. This allows for quick detection of instability in any section of the core. This need brought about the development of the self-powered neutron detector that is small, inexpensive, and rugged enough to withstand the in-core environment. The self-powered neutron detector requires no voltage supply for operation. Figure 29 illustrates a simplified drawing of a self-powered neutron detector.
