Only few applications have been reported to determine antioxidants in rubbers or polymers by using electrochemical methods [927,928]. Sawada et al. [929] reported successful separations by coupling the antioxidants with p-diazobenzene sulfonic acid before electrophoresis. Amine AOs were coupled in acetic acid and phenolic AOs in NaOH-ethanol were analysed by CE methods. MEKC separation of the four major food grade antioxidants (PG, BHA, BHT, TBHQ) was completed within 6 min with pmole amount detection using UV absorption [930]. RPLC was not as efficient and required larger sample amounts and longer separation times. [Pg.277]

Uses. Plastics and synthetic rubber are the major uses for styrene. They account for the exponential growth from a few million pounds per year in 1938 to more than 8 billion pounds today. The numerous plastics include polystyrene, styrenated polyesters, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), and styrene-butadiene (SB). Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) was a landmark chemical achievement when it was comrner-cialized during World War II. The styrene derivatives are found everywhere—in food-grade film, coys, construction pipe, foam, boats, latex paints, tires, luggage, and furniture. [Pg.131]

A 60 durometer EPDM rubber for a pure bleach will not produce black speck contamination. It has the same excellent bleach and water resistance with the added feature of having food grade FDA compliance. All linings are to be designed for minimal shrinkage in cure and should have good thermal flexibility. [Pg.127]

Phosphoric acid is corrosive to most construction materials and rubber-lined steel or food-grade stainless steel holding vessels are generally recommended. [Pg.102]

The substituted phenols and cresols constitute about half the total volume of this group. Para-t-butylphenol is produced by the alkylation of phenol with isobutylene. The principal applications for this derivative are in the manufacture of modified phenolic resins for the rubber industry and in surface coatings. BHT is obtained from isobutylene and p-cresol. Technical-grade BHT is an antioxidant for plastics and elastomers, and is a gum inhibitor in gasoline. Food-grade BHT is an antioxidant in edible oils, preserves, and many other foods. 2,6-Di-t-butylphenol is used to produce a wide range of plastics additives, antioxidants, and gasoline additives. [Pg.389]

The use of antimicrobial additives has been mentioned in section 12.7.2, but another route has also been investigated, the deposition of silver nanoparticles, under formaldehyde-radio frequency plasma conditions, onto food-grade silicone rubber. The bacteriocidal properties of the silver-coated surfaces were investigated by exposing them to Listeria monocytogenes, with no bacteria being detected after exposure times of 12 to 18 hours. [Pg.297]

Another system, based on certain ancient practices where pebbles were put inside the wine vats, consists of using a balloon made of food-grade rubber, connected to an air or oxygen source. The balloon is inflated inside the vat to compensate for low wine levels and deflated as required to avoid overflows. [Pg.411]
