Rosacea metronidazole

Another topical antibiotic, metronidazole, is effective in the treatment of acne rosacea. Metronidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole derivative that reduces inflammation by an unknown mechanism. Other selected topical antibiotics are listed in Table 41.2. [Pg.491]

Systemic treatment of erythrosis finds its rationale in the association of rosacea with H. Pylori infection. The following scheme has heen suggested clarithromycin 250 mg twice daily + metronidazole 400 mg twice daily clarithrom-... [Pg.192]

In papulo-pustular rosacea 25-30% salicylic acid peeling is utilized in association with systemic treatment with metronidazole or antibiotics and topical treatment as for erythrosis (Figs. 1715,1716 and i/.i/)-... [Pg.193]

Metronidazole also is indicated for amebiasis and trichomoniasis, intravaginally for bacterial vaginosis, and topically for acne rosacea. [Pg.1654]

Metronidazole is effective in the treatment of acne rosacea although for this indication its mechanism of action is not clearly understood. Long-term topical use for this indication is not recommended. This advice is founded on experiments in animals showing a carcinogenic effect by oral administration of metronidazole. There is inadequate evidence of the safety of metronidazole in human pregnancy. Metronidazole is classified in Lactation Risk Category L3 (moderately safe). [Pg.480]

Clindamycin is active against Propionibacterium acnes. Erythromycin alone and in combination with benzoyl peroxide is used in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Topical metronidazole is effective in the treatment of acne rosacea. [Pg.449]

Topical metronidazole is effective in the treatment of rosacea. The mechanism of action is unknown, but it may relate to the inhibitory effects of metronidazole on Demodex brevis alternately, the drug may act as an anti-inflammatory agent by direct effect on neutrophil cellular function. Oral metronidazole has been shown to be a carcinogen in susceptible rodent species, and topical use during pregnancy and by nursing mothers and children is therefore not recommended. [Pg.1288]

Topical preparations for the treatment of rosacea include metronidazole 0.75% or 1% cream, 0.75% gel, or lotion. None of these preparations is FDA-approved for ophthalmic use, but they have been beneficial fiar some patients. [Pg.389]

In most instances patients demonstrate significant improvement of clinical symptomatology and physical signs in the first 2 to 3 weeks. Many patients, however, require chronic therapy and demonstrate exacerbations of the disease during its course. Metronidazole (MetroGel) is a topical gel developed to treat the skin of the facial area in patients with chronic disease and thus reduce the reliance on oral antimicrobial agents. It is applied twice daily. Although not yet an approved use, metronidazole gel applied to the eyelids was found to be an effective treatment of ocular rosacea. [Pg.464]

Rosacea prescribe topical products containing 2-3% pyruvic acid, or 1-2% salicyhc acid, or 0.05% tretinoin for 3 weeks before the procedure to reduce thickness of the stratum comeum and improve uniform penetration of the pymvic acid. This treatment should be intermpted 3 days before the procedure. Treatment with topical metronidazole or azelaic acid can be maintained. [Pg.26]

Azelaic acid is a saturated dicarboxylic acid. Its therapeutic effect in rosacea is likely based on the inhibition of the synthesis of reactive oxygen species by neutrophils. The efficacy of 15% azelaic acid gel is similar to that of 1% metronidazole gel [39, 40]. [Pg.161]

Five percent permethrin significantly reduces the burden of Demodex folliculorum in the skin of patients with rosacea. Its efficacy is similar to that of 0.75% metronidazole gel [49, 50]. Also 10% crotamitone seems to be effective in papulopustular rosacea [51],... [Pg.162]

Oral isotretinoin can be used in patients with severe varieties of rosacea in whom only partial remissions with oral tetracyclines and metronidazole were obtained. [Pg.162]

According to Cochrane [60], only metronidazole and azelaic acid showed to be effective in the topical treatment of rosacea. [Pg.162]

In a Cochrane study [60], 33 clinical studies on systemic therapy of rosacea were chosen, of which 8 were considered evaluable according to the methodological point of view [8]. On the basis of this study, only oral tetracyclines and metronidazole were considered effective in rosacea. Tetracyclines act as anti-inflammatory agents.
