Roles of Glutamate in Brain

Erecinska M. and Silver I. A. (1990). Metabolism and role of glutamate in mammalian brain. Prog. Neurobiol. 35 245-296. [Pg.69]

In the literature dangerous for brain neurons effect of ROS was traditionally underestimated — one can believe that multi-step antioxidant system should provide reliable protection. Actually, antioxidants are able to remove toxic component of glutamate overloading and keep neurons viable. However, this point of view is under serious doubt because of both a multiple role of antioxidants in brain metabolism [1,38,52] and apparent absence of therapeutic effect of antioxidant protection [42]. [Pg.163]

Fig. 3. Glutdimate cycles in the brain. The scheme shows the roles of glutamate in the brain. In the neuron, glutamate may act as a transmitter, precursor for GABA, or in the metabolic pool. An example is shown of how the three pools can be selectively destroyed in neostriatum. Glutamate is formed from glucose through the citric acid (TCA) cycle, from glutamine or 2-oxoglutarate. The latter two are derived from the glial cells. Fig. 3. Glutdimate cycles in the brain. The scheme shows the roles of glutamate in the brain.
