In 1746 Dr. John Roebuck (1718-1794), of Birmingham, and Samuel Garbett substituted lead chambers, each about six feet square, for the glass globes introduced six years previously by Joshua Ward (22), an improvement which cut down the cost of producing the acid to one-fourth of its former amount (12, 13). Three years later, after the substitution of sulfuric acid for sour milk in the old process of bleaching had created a demand for the acid, Roebuck and Garbett erected a sulfuric acid plant at Prestonpans, on the east coast of Scotland (14). Since a salt industry also flourished there, Prestonpans was named for the salt pans. [Pg.186]

The results of Roebuck and Evering (15) who used A1 Cl 3-type catalysts and temperatures down to -20 C can also be explained by the production of esters with both 2-butene and ethylene. They had found that Improved alkylate qualities occurred as the reaction temperature was decreased, but yields of alkylate were significantly reduced at lower temperatures. The validity of the computed equilibria is substantiated by the experimental cis/trans ratios for the three positional isomers of dimethyl-cyclohexane, measured at ambient temperature by Roebuck and Evering (42) and at 175° by Boelhouwer et al. The need for biliary drainage in children is less frequent than in adults however, there are a number of indications for performing a percutaneous tran-shepatic cholangiogram (PTC) (Diament et al. 1985). The most common indications for PTC is obstructive jaundice resulting from either a malignancy, most commonly rhabdomyosarcoma of the bile ducts or pancreas and neuroblastoma, or post liver transplantation. Cholithiasis is less frequently a causative agent (Lorenz et al. 2001 Roebuck and Stanley 2000 Rose et al. 2001). Cholangitis, which is a relatively common indication for PTC in adults, is rarely seen in children. [Pg.232]
