Risk management professional consultants

Definitions of risk in risk management and insurance literature were reviewed with the expectation that they would be helpful. In summary, they emphasize the uncertainty or the lack of predictability concerning loss. It is a fundamental actuarial concept that risk implies uncertainty. But definitions of risk based on uncertainty do not communicate entirely the nature of risk for which safety professionals give counsel. I cannot conceive of safety professionals presenting themselves as consultants in uncertainty reduction. 

In both of these cases, the benefit is that the decision of compensability was made by an unbiased individual. Imagine a situation where you assume that an injury that is being reported is fraudulent and you believe the claim should be denied. Such a decision, based on emotions, assumptions, and lack of considering the full scope of workers compensation law, can result in liability for your school if the claim is denied without foundation. A school system risk manager or other similar professional should be consulted to determine how compensability is determined for injuries that occur within a given school. 

Your Trust s Risk Management Department (or similar) will deal with Sis. They ll inform you of an SI if you didn t already know, and guide you through the internal enquiry process. A panel will be formed which usually includes a Risk Management Department representative, an independent Trust consultant, and a non-medical health professional. An external investigation may take place if the incident s very serious (e.g. homicide), or the Trust s investigation is considered unsatisfactory. 

In exceptional cases and after consulting OICM. persons having a different education can also be recognized as technical managers, provided that they have the necessary professional knowledge and practical experience and that the company manufactures only low-risk drugs by simple processes. 

Hazards in the workplace are best solved in-house where there are adequate resomces to accommodate and control the risks. The cost and time of professionals (engineers, doctors, ergonomists) have to be considered when professional assistance is reqitired. However, there are times when special problems or limitations in resomces prohibit the effective management of hazards in the workplace and a consultant is needed.
