Risk-based maintenance

Risk-based maintenance priorities that ensure sufficient resources are applied to items identified as high risk (critical equipment). 

A. Reliability-centered maintenance RCM provides an engineering, risk-based technique for managing equipment performance. The method takes the large, highly nonintuitive problem of identifying high-risk failure modes and divides it into many small, easily solved problems in order to design a risk-based maintenance plan.

The third type of risk is to do with what is referred to as RAM. This topic, which is discussed in detail in Chapter 20, is related to troubleshooting but implies a higher degree of predictability. Based on historical records, the failure rates and repair times of equipment items can be predicted and maintenance schedules can be set up so as to preemptively address potential problems. Management systems such as Risk-Based Maintenance and Risk-Based Inspection are often integrated with the RAM program. Investments in availability improvement programs are often very attractive because such investments have a disproportionate effect on profitability. 

Recently there are efforts to fix the times between inspections of functionality and integrity on the basis of probabilistic considerations (cf. Chap. 9). This is known as risk-based inspection or risk-based maintenance.

ABSTRACT One of the main challenges for electricity distribution companies is to manage the existing assets in the comprehensive and complex distribution system infrastructure. Maintenance and reinvestments are important parts of this. This paper presents a practical approach for estabUshing risk-based maintenance strategies for electricity distribution systems. The model can be used to evaluate the strategies for risk-based maintenance and cost-effective maintenance. It can also evaluate the performance measures according to the practical inspection requirements, that requires visual inspection to be 168 hours and the maximum train recording car interval to be 3 months.
