Precipitators are currently used for high collection efficiency on fine particles. The use of electric discharge to suppress smoke was suggested in 1828. The principle was rediscovered in 1850, and independently in 1886 and attempts were made to apply it commercially at the Dee Bank Lead Works in Great Britain. The installation was not considered a success, probably because of the cmde electrostatic generators of the day. No further developments occurred until 1906 when Frederick Gardiner Cottrell at the University of California revived interest (U.S. Pat. 895,729) in 1908. The first practical demonstration of a Cottrell precipitator occurred in a contact sulfuric acid plant at the Du Pont Hercules Works, Pinole, California, about 1907. A second installation was made at Vallejo Junction, California, for the Selby Smelting and Lead Company. [Pg.397]

Natural Gas Upgrading via Fischer-Tropsch. In the United States, as in other countries, scarcities from World War II revived interest in the synthesis of fuel substances. A study of the economics of Fischer synthesis led to the conclusion that the large-scale production of gasoline from natural gas offered hope for commercial utiHty. In the Hydrocol process (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.) natural gas was treated with high purity oxygen to produce the synthesis gas which was converted in fluidized beds of kon catalysts (42). [Pg.81]

Linear a-olefins were produced by wax cracking from about 1962 to about 1985, and were first commercially produced from ethylene in 1965. More recent developments have been the recovery of pentene and hexene from gasoline fractions (1994) and a revival of an older technology, the production of higher carbon-number olefins from fatty alcohols. [Pg.437]

Before the invention of the Bessemer process for steelmaking in 1856, only the cementation and cmcible processes were of any industrial importance. Although both of the latter processes had been known in the ancient world, thek practice seems to have been abandoned in Europe before the Middle Ages. The cementation process was revived in Belgium around 1600, whereas the cmcible process was rediscovered in the British Isles in 1740. [Pg.373]

Both processes were practiced in secret for some time after thek revival, and Httie is known of thek early history. The cementation process flourished in the United Kingdom during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and continued to be used to a limited extent into the early part of the twentieth century. [Pg.373]

The passing of the Clean Air Act in the United Kingdom in 1956 resulted in a revival of interest in low temperature carbonization to produce a very reactive coke suitable for open fires. In the CoaUte process, the coal is heated at 600—650°C for 4 h in small retorts each hoi ding 6—7 metric tons (5). The Rexco process employed large internally heated retorts in which charges of 34 metric tons were heated to 700—750°C for 6 h, but is no longer in operation in the United Kingdom (6). [Pg.336]

In the 1990s, the use of batteries in electric vehicles and for load leveling is being revived partly for environmental reasons and partly because of scarce energy resources. Improvements in battery performance and life, fewer maintenance requirements, and automatic control systems are making these appHcations feasible. Research and development is ongoing all over the world to develop improved lead—acid batteries as weU as other systems to meet these needs. [Pg.572]

Different polyamide fibers with varying affinities for anionic dyes are pretreated with aqueous acidic solution containing sulfated castor od to give uniform shade levels. Sulfated castor od is also used in compositions for treatment of fabrics, skins, and furs to clean and revive colors (115). [Pg.156]

These difficulties have led to a revival of work on internal coordinate approaches, and to date several such techniques have been reported based on methods of rigid-body dynamics [8,19,34-37] and the Lagrange-Hamilton formalism [38-42]. These methods often have little in common in their analytical formulations, but they all may be reasonably referred to as internal coordinate molecular dynamics (ICMD) to underline their main distinction from conventional MD They all consider molecular motion in the space of generalized internal coordinates rather than in the usual Cartesian coordinate space. Their main goal is to compute long-duration macromolecular trajectories with acceptable accuracy but at a lower cost than Cartesian coordinate MD with bond length constraints. This task mrned out to be more complicated than it seemed initially. [Pg.122]

Historically, EELS is one of the oldest spectroscopic techniques based ancillary to the transmission electron microscope. In the early 1940s the principle of atomic level excitation for light element detection capability was demonstrated by using EELS to measure C, N, and O. Unfortunately, at that time the instruments were limited by detection capabilities (film) and extremely poor vacuum levels, which caused severe contamination of the specimens. Twenty-five years later the experimental technique was revived with the advent of modern instrumentation. The basis for quantification and its development as an analytical tool followed in the mid 1970s. Recent reviews can be found in the works by Joy, Maher and Silcox " Colliex and the excellent books by Raether and Egerton. ... [Pg.137]

There has been a revival of interest in recent years in antimony mercaptides as alternatives to the organo-tin stabilisers. This stems from the low level of toxicity and the strong synergism with calcium stearate. However, compared to the... [Pg.329]

Copolymers of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate gave polymers that were somewhat tougher and slightly softer than the homopolymers. Materials believed to be of this type were marketed in sheet form by ICI as Asterite for a short while in the 1960s (the name having been recently revived for another product as described in Section 15.2.6). [Pg.413]

Meanwhile, electron theory was revived effectively in Hume-Rothery s own base of Oxford, and is now led by a distinguished mathematical physicist, David Pettifor. [Pg.138]
