Retrospective determinations

Application to Human Exposure (Urine and Blood). To date, there have been no reports of the collection of biomedical samples from individuals with suspected lewisite exposure. Samples from such an incident will be critical for confirming the validity of assaying for the biomarkers observed in animal models. Additionally, the biomarkers that have been investigated in animal studies to date have indicated a rapid clearance in urine and less so for blood. This will obviously create severe problems for the retrospective determination of lewisite exposure beyond a few days at most when analyzing urine samples. The blood assay for both bound and free CVAA will potentially provide a longer opportunity for retrospective confirmation of exposure (based on one animal study), but also indicates a substantial decrease (90%) in concentration levels observed over a 10 day period. 

Daily intake of CLA has been calculated for several countries and the estimates are presented in Table 8.9. The techniques utilized varied from use of national dietary survey data (12,79) to dietary assessment of small groups of subjects using 24-h, 3-or 7-d dietary records, retrospective determination by food-frequency questionnaire (43,80-83), or a combination of assessment techniques (43,81,83). 

In order to avoid conception, abstinence from sexual intercourse during the fertile period of the menstmal cycle must be practiced (77,104). It has been deterrnined that the fertile period in women occurs before menstmation (105,106), and formulas have been developed to determine the fertile and infertile days of the menstmal cycle. Ovulation has been linked to a cycHc shift in basal body temperature (107), which can be used retrospectively to determine the time of ovulation. 

No information on the carcinogenic potential of polyalphaolefin hydraulic fluids was located. Studies designed to assess carcinogenicity in animals exposed via inhalation, oral, and dermal routes or a well-controlled cohort retrospective or prospective study would be useful for determining the carcinogenic potential of polyalphaolefin hydraulic fluids. 

The serendipitous discovery of this compound has proven to be extremely important to our visions of possibilities for new metal-metal bonded structures in reduced oxide phases. In retrospect it is amazing that oxide phases containing molybdenum in oxidation states less than 4+ were essentially unknown and certainly structurally uncharacterized. The existence of the previously mentioned series M2 Mo30q and LiM Mo303 should have been a tip-off to an extensive chemistry for metal-metal bonded molybdenum oxide systems. Indeed, subsequent work has revealed a plethora of new compounds all of which (where structure has been determined) feature strong metal-metal bonding in either discrete cluster units or extended chain arrays. 

In considering the many conflicts in the evidence, as the multitude of circumstances from which inferences may be drawn, as disclosed by the voluminous record before us we have endeavored to avoid the danger of viewing the conduct of the defendants wholly in retrospect. On the contrary, we have sought to determine their knowledge, their states-of-mind, and their motives from the situation as it appeared, or should have appeared, to them at the time. 

Menopause is determined retrospectively after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea. FSH on day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle greater than 10 to 12 international units/L suggests presence of perimenopause.

In retrospect, it should have been clear to me - as I am sure it was to Bill Jencks -that the rate and equilibrium constants for addition of solvent to 1-phenylethyl carbocation intermediates of solvolysis of 1-phenylethyl derivatives would serve as the first step in the characterization of the dynamics of the reactions of their ion pair intermediates. Therefore, this earlier work has served as a point of departure for our experiments to determine relative and absolute barriers to the reactions of ion pair intermediates of solvolysis. 

One can readily see that the conclusions of the authors are based on numerous assumptions rather than on factual data. Unfortunately, this is the nature of retrospective epidemiological studies. One cannot really fault the authors for their sequence of theories leading them to a possible source of the infections. Such efforts are necessary for sorting out the potential source of infections and. through follow-up studies and designed experiments, we can determine sources of infections and methods for prevention. They evidently did omit some observations on the meat samples they did check and observations on the adjacent dairy herd and. they did not take samples from the cattle s environment on the beef farm. If the beef farm was thought to be the source, there should have been more effort to find the organism on that farm. 

Chronic health effects in humans from exposure to 2-nitropropane have not been adequately determined, although a retrospective mortality smdy of 1481 employees and former employees of a 2-nitropropane production facility with up to 27 years of exposure found no increase in cancer of the liver or other organs and no unusual disease mortality pattern. ... 

Finally, we note that plasma protein binding is generally determined on a retrospective or interpretation basis, and it is seldom determined routinely, as... 

While some prospective data collection is required for almost all pharmacoeconomic studies, the amount of data to be collected for the pharmacoeconomic evaluation is still the subject of much debate. There is no definitive means of addressing this issue at present. Phase II studies can be used to develop data that will help determine which resource consumption items are essential for the economic evaluation. Without this opportunity for prior data collection, however, we must rely upon expert opinion to suggest major resource consumption items that should be monitored within the study. Duplicate data collection strategies (prospective evaluation of resource consumption within the study s case report form with retrospective assessment of resource consumption from hospital bills) can be used to ensure that data collection strategies do not miss critical data elements.
