Response options

The broadest view of "aiding and abetting" includes doing nothing, but merely watching natural processes occur without further intervention. This has been termed "Intrinsic Bioremediation", and it too has met with success. From an environmental point of view, although unfortunately not always from a regulatory viewpoint, it is important that any remediation intervention yield a clear net environmental benefit. Sometimes very mild stimulation of intrinsic processes may be the most environmentally responsible option.

The practice guideline of the American Psychiatric Association recommends that after 6 to 8 weeks of antidepressant treatment, partial responders should consider changing the dose, augmenting the antidepressant, or adding psychotherapy or ECT. For those with no response, options include changing to another antidepressant or the addition of psychotherapy or ECT.

In general, the structure itself of the multiple-choice item should not be blamed for a test s deficiencies rather, the way in which the item content is derived, the manner by which items are aggregated, and the theory under which test results are interpreted cause much of the difficulty. As most testing specialists know, it is possible to construct good multiple-choice items that do require a student to demonstrate an understanding of the subject matter. These items are not easy to develop. Their content is usually complex, and their response options are carefully crafted to glean information about the student s knowledge. 

Another 25% of the mismatches occurred when both the model and the student selected different wrong situations as the response option. In these cases, the model correctly determined that the student would not give the correct response. The model s answers may differ from the student s for a number of reasons, including guessing. These were, after all, multiple choice exercises in which students were asked to select the correct situation from the menu of five possible ones. Students probably guessed at some of the answers, but the model does not guess. 

With respect to the first question, we can look to a model that makes its selections randomly, with each of the five response options having equal probability of selection. We would expect such a model to match the students responses 20% of the time, simply by chance. The issue is whether the performance model does better than this random model in accounting for the students responses. We can see from Table 13.2 that the performance model exactly matched the students responses on 71% of the... 

The smart response capability of polysaccharides upon application of stress allows polar and apolar domains to easily form or disintegrate due to variation of the order/disorder ratio at the molecular level. This finally results in variation of specific crystallinity index or crystalline/amorphous ratio at the macroscopic level. Significant variation of interactive properties may even be achieved by minor variation of branching characteristics, which changes surface/volume ratio and, hence, preferences for inter- or intramolecular stabilization. Additionally, a rather effective response option is variation of relative percentages of molar and mass fractions by limited degradation/ reorganization or precipitation/dissolution transition. 

To remain effective, response options detailed in contingency plans must be tested frequently. This testing is conducted by responding to a practice spill as though it were real. This varies from a tabletop exercise to large-scale field exercises in which equipment is deployed and oil is actually spilled and recovered. Such exercises not only maintain and increase the skills of the response personnel, but also lead to improvements and fine tuning of the plan as weaknesses and gaps are identified. 

Another use of video monitoring is to identify when and where a release has occurred. Release of noxious incapacitating vapors can be observed as groups of people cough or pass out. In such cases, video monitoring can act as a primary detector for the presence of an attack. Video systems also have dual uses to providing feedback on the effectiveness of response options, such as evacuations, and for remote situational awareness. 

The protection of existing buildings and their occupants from a biological or chemical threat requires the integration of operational procedures with specific building and detection or identification system attributes and response options. 

Establishment of predetermined response strategies to support decision making by WMATA and other emergency responders during an incident is key to the operation of the PROTECT system. Response options include stopping trains (some or all) or moving trains away from the affected areas. The video information also can help in the deployment of emergency response personnel to the affected station(s).

We began our evaluation of immediate response options shortly before the buyout of Times Beach. Table III lists some of the options that could be implemented in a short time frame and which would remove people from dioxin exposure at Quail Run Mobile Home Manor (A), and two other sites (18). 

In addition to immediate response options, we also examined a variety of longer-term options. The two most reasonable options were long-term storage of the contaminated soil in a centralized landfill or incineration in a specially designed, large-scale incinerator, with appropriate economics of scale (1, ).
